5 Workplace procedures refer to the verbal or documented procedures for performing work activities and include health and safety, operational, environmental, and quality management requirements. They may refer to manuals, manufacturer's specifications, codes of practice, or policy statements.

Elements and performance criteria

Element 1

Demonstrate knowledge of spinning machine set-up.

Performance criteria

1.1 Spinning machine settings which may be changed during set-up and tuning are described in terms of their effect on spinning process and product quality.

Range draft, twist level, twist direction, spindle speed, machine speed, package build, traveller type, traveller size, lappets, false twist speed, spool tension, anti-snarl adjustment, doffing cycle.

1.2 Yarn tests are described and results analysed to confirm processing and product specification.

Range count, twist level, twist direction, strength, yarn evenness, strobe for spindle speed, and other tests carried out in the workplace.

Element 2

Prepare woollen spinning machine for operation.

Performance criteria

2.1 Adjustments are made to spinning machine in accordance with workplace procedures.

2.2 Spinning machine is clean and condition of machine components meet machine operating requirements.

Range travellers, rings, false twist, pneumafil, cots, spindle tapes, spindle brakes, oiling system, spindle divider plates.

2.3 Spinning machine settings produce yarn to specification in accordance with workplace procedures.

Range draft, twist level, twist direction, spindle speed, machine speed, package build, traveller type, traveller size, lappets, false twist speed, spool tension, anti-snarl adjustment, doffing cycle, cyclic variator setting.

2.4 Instrumentation and control devices are set in accordance with workplace procedures.

Run spinning machine to optimise machine settings.

Performance criteria

3.1 Machine is operated in accordance with workplace procedures.

Product is produced in accordance with workplace procedures.

Test samples are taken in accordance with workplace procedures.

Test results are assessed and machine adjustments made to achieve product specification in accordance with workplace procedures.

Range count, twist, yarn quality.

Please note

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.

Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.

Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
