Purpose
This unit standard is for people working in the wool scouring industry. People
credited with this unit standard are able to prepare and use a wool press and
associated equipment to process scoured wool, identify problems in the
operation of the press and associated equipment, produce bales to the
required specification, carry out sampling procedures, carry out minor
maintenance and maintain records as required.

Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Prepare press and sampling equipment.
Performance criteria
1.1
Mechanical equipment checked and verified as meeting workplace safety
criteria.
Range
safety guards, press controls, cut-off switches, oil leaks,
obstructions to moving parts.
1.2
Safety equipment is used according to workplace practice.
1.3
Press is set according to work instructions.
Range
bale weight, number of tamps, bale dimensions.
Element 2
Operate press.
Performance criteria
2.1
Press is operated according to manufacturer’s instructions and workplace
practice.
2.2
Press controls and indicators are monitored to identify incorrect or unsafe
operation.
Range
controls and indicators on equipment installed in workplace.
2.3
Sensors, solenoids, and cut-off switches are monitored for malfunctions.
2.4
Bales are wrapped and secured in pressed state according to workplace
practice and in accordance with safety procedures.
Element 3
Brand and/or label bales.
Range
method of branding and/or labelling – will depend on installed machinery and
workplace and/or industry requirements;
competency – will be demonstrated using equipment at the workplace.

3.1
Information on brand and/or label is accurate and according to work instruction.

Brands and/or labels are legible and clearly visible.

Brands and/or labels are applied according to procedure for type of brand/label
being used.

Element 4
Weigh bales and take wool samples for testing.
Performance criteria
4.1
Bales are weighed and weight recorded according to workplace practice.
4.2
Samples are taken to required sampling frequency according to workplace
practice and Test House regulations.
4.3
Sampling equipment is used in manner required by sampling procedure and
Test House regulations.
4.4
Samples are collected and stored according to requirements of sampling
procedure and Test House regulations.
Element 5
Clean pressing equipment and perform minor maintenance.
Performance criteria
5.1
Wool is cleared from operating parts of press and sampling machines and
immediate work area to prevent contamination and mechanical damage.
5.2
Maintenance procedures are carried out according to workplace practice.
Range
oiling and greasing, drive belts and operating parts maintained to
manufacturer’s requirements, guards and safety devices operate
as designed.
Element 6
Check and maintain sampling and weighing equipment.
Performance criteria
6.1
Checks and maintenance carried out according to workplace and industry
requirements.
Range

7.1
Documentation is carried out according to workplace practice.
Please note
Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this
standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations
wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for
