This unit standard is for people working in the rural servicing
industry.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: take a
grab sample from a bale of wool; take a core sample from a
bale of wool; weigh wool; and describe wool for the auction
catalogue.

Elements and Performance Criteria
element 1
Take a grab sample from a bale of wool.
performance criteria
1.1
The number and aggregate weight of samples taken per sale lot is in
accordance with the Code of Practice.
1.2
Samples are obtained before weighing and core sampling of the bale.
1.3
The grab jaws are inserted and withdrawn from a slit in the bale in accordance
with the Code of Practice.
1.4
The weight of the grab sample taken is within the tolerance prescribed in the
Code of Practice.
1.5
Bagging, storage, and documentation of the individual samples comply with the
Code of Practice.

1.6
The bale has no wool protruding from it after the sampling in accordance with
company requirements.
1.7
Safety and operational procedures are complied with in accordance with
company requirements.

Take a core sample from a bale of wool.
performance criteria
2.1
The minimum number, weight, and precision of core samples taken are in
accordance with the core sampling schedules and principles prescribed in the
Code of Practice).
2.2
After being weighed, each bale in a sale lot is sampled with equipment of the
same type and dimensions in accordance with company requirements.
2.3
Machine and manual coring are carried out in accordance with the Code of
Practice.
2.4
Bagging, sealing, storage, and documentation of the aggregate sample comply
with the Code of Practice.
2.5
Safety and operational procedures are complied with in accordance with
company requirements.
2.6
Core sample is verified as of same line as grab sample.
2.7
Core sample and documentation are delivered together to the test house in
accordance with company requirements.

Weigh wool.
performance criteria
3.1
Weigh scales are operated according to the Code of Practice.
3.2
Gross bale weight and tare are keyed into the computer in accordance with the
Regulations to the Conditions of Sale and the Code of Practice.
3.3
Gross bale weight is written legibly on bale in accordance with the Regulations
to the Conditions of Sale.
3.4
Weight of grab samples is in accordance with the Code of Practice.
3.5
Weigh scales are left tidy, clean and in good operating order in accordance with
company requirements.

Describe wool for the auction catalogue.
performance criteria
4.1
Draft catalogue entry is altered where wool in the bale is different from
description noted on the bale in accordance with company requirements.
4.2
Wool description chosen matches the wool in the bale.
4.3
Additional codes for the wool are recorded with the description in accordance
with company requirements.

Please Note
Providers must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority or a delegated interinstitutional body before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards
or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority before
they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit
standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
