Classification Pacific Islands Early Childhood Education > Tonga: Akoteu Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Definitions A Tongan early childhood service is a culture specific service responsible for all aspects of the child’s development. Service may include but is not limited to – early childhood centres, home based early childhood educational programmes. Holistic development refers to physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual growth. Tongan protocols refer to procedures for events such as childbirth, birthdays, and weddings where a fixed procedure is followed at the time of the event. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Plan programmes that will foster children’s holistic development in Tongan early childhood education. Evidence requirements 1.1 The planned programmes include daily activities and Christian values that will foster children’s holistic development. 1.2 Planning includes evidence of consultation with staff, parents, and the community. 1.3 Planning identifies resources required for the daily programmes. Outcome 2 Facilitate programmes that will foster children’s holistic development in a Tongan early childhood service. Evidence requirements 2.1 Facilitation is in accordance with Tongan protocols. 2.2 Facilitation is in accordance with the Te Whāriki principle of holistic development. 2.3 Facilitation includes the use of Tongan and New Zealand community resources. Outcome 3 Review programmes that foster children’s holistic development in a Tongan early childhood service. Evidence requirements 3.1 Review identifies whether aims and objectives of the programmes have been met.
