WHEN: 2-3:20 MW
WHERE: McEver Hall Room ____
COURSE INFORMATION: General course information can be found on the course website. The
website can be found at pls.atu.edu/physic/people/bullock.
Follow the link titled: “Teaching”. Finally click on the link for Introduction to Nanoscience.
CLASSROOM RULES: Each student is expected to show mutual respect for one another. Since
this is a laboratory class each student must follow all safety guidelines. If a student has any
questions they should ask the instructor.
OFFICE HOURS: My office is located in McEver 03. Phone: 479.968.0230 I have an “open door
policy” meaning that anytime I am in my office you can stop by for help. My designated office
hours are MWF 4:00PM – 5:00PM, and TTH 9:30AM-11:00AM.
CO/PRE-REQUISITES: PHYS 2114 General Physics II, MATH 2924 Calulus II
COURSE OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this advanced physics course are:
 Provide the student with hands-on experience using equipment to characterize materials
at the nanoscale.
 Provide the student experience in communicating experimental results through clear
technical writing.
 Allow the students to gain an understanding of the physical laws that apply at the
nanoscale
 Allow the students to gain a greater appreciation of theory through experimental
investigation.
GRADING: There will be three exams which constitute 60% of your overall course grade. Also
there will be three lab activities that will constitute 25% of your grade. You will be expected to turn
in a written lab report for each experiment. The final 15% of your grade will come from a paper on
a selected topic in nanoscience and a oral presentation of the topic to the course.
The overall course grade will be as follows:
A : 100-90%
B: 89.999-80%
C: 79.999-70%
D: 69.999-60%
F: 59.999-0%
POLICY ON ABSENCES AND CHEATING: Any absence will be excused if the student presents
the instructor with appropriate documentation (i.e. a letter from the doctor, NOTE: This letter must
contain the doctor’s contact information). If an absence has occurred due to a death in the family
the student must present the instructor with a copy of the obituary. If a student misses class
because he/she is attending a professional school related meeting, the student must present the
instructor with a program from the meeting. Any student caught cheating will be reported to the
appropriate University authorities.
SUMMARY: This syllabus is meant to be a guideline for the course and the instructor reserves
the right to make modifications as he sees fit.
