Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to, under
supervision: catch and present sheep for shearing; apply
sequence and pattern to shear sheep; and identify wool faults,
contaminants, damaged sheep, and injuries to sheep.

Range
A minimum of three sheep are required to be shorn within thirty minutes of
continuous shearing.

Definitions
Workplace procedures – the verbal and written instructions to staff and contractors
on procedures for identification and notification of injuries to sheep, remedial action,
and wool faults and contaminants.

Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is not limited to the Health and
Safety in Employment Act 1992, Animal Welfare Act 1999, and its subsequent
amendments.

Evidence requirements
1.1
Sheep are approached, caught, and presented for shearing.
1.2
Sheep are controlled and moved to the stand in a manner which enables the
consistent application of the shearing pattern.

Apply sequence and pattern to shear sheep under supervision.

Handpiece is applied in accordance with the Shearing Handbook.
