They are able to apply this knowledge to the context of assessment for this unit standard (for further clarification, please refer to Unit 7927, Demonstrate knowledge of the application of the Treaty of Waitangi in the social services). 2 Pacific Island refers primarily to the main island groups represented in New Zealand, namely Samoan, Tongan, Cook Island, Niuean, Tokelauan, Fijian, Tuvaluan, Solomon Islands, Kiribati. 3 Participants is used as a generic term to denote people from user groups of Pacific Island social services, and may include an individual, family, group, or a Pacific Island community. Pacific Island community includes but is not limited to: a community of interest, a community of locality, a cultural community, or a kin group, where the members of the community identify themselves as Pacific people. The scope and limits of confidentiality are defined through negotiation, and informed consent of participants, and criteria established by legislation, ethical practice, and organisational guidelines. In the context of this unit standard, sources of criteria established by legislation, ethical practice, and organisational guidelines include but are not limited to: Official Information Act 1982, Privacy Act 1993, service provider codes of conduct, codes of practice issued by the Privacy Commissioner, Pacific Island social service codes of ethics, and organisational guidelines, protocols, staff manuals, strategic plans, kaupapa. 6 Key people include but are not limited to: people within a family, community group, service provider, or organisation who are given the authority or mana by the family, community group, service provider, or organisation to speak on their behalf by virtue of their position, expertise, knowledge, or status, or because they are otherwise representative of those who are seeking advocacy. Range: nature of the Pacific Island people requiring advocacy - age and stage of development, culture, disability, gender, health status, language, sexual orientation; needs for physical comfort, safety, privacy, religious adherence. 2.2 Planning is conducted using methods that encourage self-determination of the Pacific Island people requiring advocacy and encourage independence from the Pacific Island social service worker and service provider. 2.3 Proposals for an advocacy case are within parameters established with the Pacific Island people requiring advocacy. Range: parameters - culture, values, and experience of the Pacific Island people requiring advocacy; desired outcome of advocacy; gives voice to the Pacific Island people requiring advocacy; potential for effectiveness in achieving the desired outcome; nature of support of other interested people; nature of opposition of other interested people; nature of support by participants; evidence is required of three of the range. Range: prescribed requirements - format, minimum number of copies, due date, confidentiality requirements, non-publication requirements. 3.5 Problems encountered in implementation are responded to in accordance with the provisions in the plan for contingencies. 3.6 Implementation is approved according to the Pacific Island social service worker's role and function, cultural protocols, and criteria established by legislation, ethical practice, and organisational guidelines. element 4 Evaluate the advocacy case for Pacific Island people requiring advocacy. performance criteria 4.1 Implementation of the advocacy case is evaluated in consultation with the Pacific Island people requiring advocacy.
