Explanatory notes
1 Definitions
Nursery Crop refers to a crop of no less than 50 plants.

2 It is intended at that at least one nursery crop is produced from the planning stage through to the preparation of the crop for sale or dispatch. Alternatively several small crops grown in similar conditions, for example, in the same plant house, could be used for this unit standard. The crop or crops selected should take no more than two years from planning and establishment to reaching a saleable size.
3 Although the candidate should be aware of the processes, they should not be expected to make decisions such as the species or cultivars to be grown, the numbers of plants to be produced, the market for the crop, or the date the crop is required. However, the candidate will use this information while planning the crop production.
4 Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is not limited to the Health and
Safety in Employment Act 1992, the Resource Management Act 1991, the Plant
Variety Rights Act 1987 and their subsequent amendments.

Outcome 1
Plan the production of a specified nursery crop.
Range one crop of nursery plants
– container or field grown, indoors or outdoors.
Evidence requirements
1.1 A production schedule is prepared in terms of the enterprise production requirements.
Range may include the plant species or cultivar to grow, the numbers required, the market to be supplied, the date the saleable plants are required, key production process dates, when likely labour demands will occur, when growing space is needed.
1.2 The growing method selected is suitable in terms of the crop, the available growing facilities, and the buyer’s requirements.
Range may select from container or field grown; planter bag or rigid pot or other container system; grown indoors or outdoors; the growing medium to use.
1.3 The material, labour, equipment, and space requirements for the crop are calculated in terms of the costs, quantities needed and timing.
1.4 The decision on plant material source is made in terms of workplace procedures, facilities available, propagating material available, costs, labour and time constraints.

1.5 The quality standards the plants are to meet are established in accordance with workpl ace procedures and the buyer’s requirements.

Manage the production of the nursery crop.
Evidence requirements
2.1 The crop plants are established in a suitable environment in terms of plant species or cultivar, the stage of plant growth, and the chosen production process.

Quality standards are achieved by the use of appropriate plant management techniques and suitable growing environments.
Range may include plant spacing, day length, light levels, irrigation management, fertiliser applications, weed control, potting on, staking, pruning, training, use of growth regulators, plant conditioning.
2.3 The crop is monitored during production to ensure that the plant growth targets and quality standards will be met in accordance with the production plan.
2.4 Plant health is monitored and recorded, and prevention, control, or correction methods are carried out as required.
2.5 Labour use matches the production tasks, the need to meet production timelines, and is within the labour requirements calculated to produce the crop.
2.6 Adjustments made to any controlled growing environment ensure plants achieve the required quality standards by the target date.
2.7 Production records are maintained in accordance with workplace procedures.
Outcome 3
Prepare the nursery crop for sale.
Evidence requirements
3.1 Plants are checked prior to sale or dispatch to ensure quality standards are achieved, and target numbers and dates are met or adjusted as required in accordance with workplace procedures.
Range quality checks include but are not limited to
– free from pest and disease, within grade requirements, healthy plants, produce numbers checked, paperwork updated.
3.2 Treatments, as required, are carried out in a timely manner prior to dispatch.
Range may include conditioning, hardening off, undercutting, root pruning.
3.3 Prepare plants for sale or dispatch, in accordance with buyer’s requirements, quality standards, and workplace procedures.
Range may include lifting plants, cleaning containers, packaging roots, grading plants, adding sleeves or other packaging, adding any promotional material or labelling, packing plants.
3.4 Preparation and sales records are maintained in accordance with workplace procedures.
