New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 21634 version 3 Page 2 of 4 Elements and performance criteria Element 1 Demonstrate knowledge of the blend preparation process and equipment. Performance criteria 1.1 Machine sections are described in terms of their function and operation. Range 1.2 Reasons for blending are explained. Range 1.3 sections will depend on machine installed in workplace but would normally include weigh or lay table, fibre opening, transfer fan and ducting, fibre storage. reasons may include but not be restricted to – colour, process performance, product performance, price. Machine and batch information is identified from the work instructions. Element 2 Prepare and blend fibre. Performance criteria 2.1 Machine is operated according to plant safety practices. 2.2 Equipment is prepared for operation according to workplace practice and work instructions. Range fibre from previous batch is removed from the process line, weighing devices calibrated and set, machine settings entered, transfer ducting and receiving area selected. 2.3 Blend components are assembled, and labels are checked to confirm fibre is as specified in work instructions. 2.4 Start-up sequence for machinery is followed according to machine requirements. 2.5 Blend components are monitored to ensure component ratio is maintained according to work instructions. 2.6 Product and machinery are monitored during processing and adjustments are made as required to optimise production and quality. 2.7 Machine blockages are cleared when they occur, according to workplace and plant safety practices. New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 21634 version 3 Page 3 of 4 2.8 Production is handled and records are maintained according to workplace practice. Range 3.2 may include but not restricted to – fibre type and quality, incorrect lays, contamination. Blending line machine malfunction is identified, and corrective action is taken according to workplace practice. Range may include but not restricted to – feed roller blockages, bearing and shaft wraps, unexplained noise. Element 4 Keep machine and work area clean. Performance criteria 4.1 Machine and work area are kept clear of fibre and waste to prevent contamination. 4.2 Machine is cleaned periodically during production, and at batch end according to workplace practice and in accordance with plant safety practices. 4.3 Waste is collected and sorted by type for recycling.
