This unit standard is intended for sworn or warranted police
officers. People credited with this unit standard are able to:
determine vehicle slip angle while in a state of yaw or
rotation; determine the initial impact alignment of vehicles;
determine vehicle’s post impact departure direction and line
of travel; display gradients on the computer generated plan;
and insert vehicle photographs and/or profiles on an
illustrative plan.

Recommended: Unit 20284 Produce a computer generated
plan to provide crime scene information; Unit 20286 Identify
and report on causative and/or related events in a traffic
crash; or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills.
accreditation option:
Evaluation of documentation and visit by NZQA and industry.
moderation option:
A centrally established and directed national moderation
system has been set up by The Skills Organisation.

Definitions
COM refers to the centre of mass of a vehicle.
crime scene is any location where an incident has
occurred. The commission of the incident upon
investigation may disclose a criminal offence against
the criminal statutes of New Zealand law.
Workplace procedures refers to documented
procedures specific to the police, which set out the
quality management requirements for the business
practice and activities of that organisation.
Yaw means the motion of a car that is both sliding and
rotating simultaneously.

codes of conduct relating to traffic crash reporting,
investigation and forensic mapping apply to this unit
standard

but is not limited to the Cadastral Survey Act 2002,
Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Police Act
1958, Transit New Zealand Act 1989, Trespass Act
1980, and all regulations related to these acts.

Vehicle photographs are shown at plan scale.
5.2
Scale elevation or plan profiles of incident vehicles are clearly positioned and
referenced.
