This unit standard is for on-job learning and assessment for
people working in the resource recovery industry.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate
knowledge of a baler; prepare to operate a baler; demonstrate
the operation of a baler; compact a recycled or recoverable
material and produce bales; and maintain a baler and bale
area.

Explanatory notes
1
Hazard controls, safety procedures, and personal protective equipment must be used
in accordance with company procedures.

The type of the baler used for assessment may be horizontal or vertical, compactor
or mill, with a wrapping or banding end process. The maintenance of the baler is
restricted to daily operating maintenance and excludes machine repairs and servicing
that according to the manufacturer’s instructions must be undertaken by a specialist.

Definition
 Company procedures mean the documented methods for performing work
activities and include health and safety, environmental, and quality management
requirements. They may refer to manuals, codes of practice, or policy statements.

Outcome 1
Demonstrate knowledge of a baler.
Evidence requirements
1.1
The potential hazards of operating baling machines are identified and hazard
controls are outlined in accordance with company procedures.
1.2
The mechanical functions of a baler are described in accordance with company
procedures.
Outcome 2
Prepare to operate a baler.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Requirements for compacting and baling are confirmed in accordance with
company procedures.
Range
includes but is not limited to – preparation of material to be baled,
compression, strapping, recording.
2.2
Baler prestart checks are demonstrated in accordance with company
procedures.
2.3
Feed requirements are confirmed with supervisor of supply in accordance with
company procedures.
Range
2.4
requirements include but are not limited to – consistency of supply,
planned intervals.
Unsuitable material is identified and rejected in accordance with client
requirements, manufacturer’s instructions, and company procedures.
Outcome 3
Demonstrate the operation of a baler.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Baler start-up and shutdown procedures are demonstrated in accordance with
company procedures and manufacturer’s instructions.
3.2
Baler is operated safely in accordance with company procedures.
3.3
Emergency shutdown is demonstrated in accordance with company
procedures.

Outcome 4
Compact a recycled or recoverable material and produce bales.
Evidence requirements
4.1
Input material is assessed and a quantity sufficient to produce complete bales is
determined in accordance with company procedures.
4.2
The input material is received and fed into the baler in accordance with
company procedures.

4.3
may include – communication with people supplying the input
material, dealing with reject material.
Operating specifications are maintained and processing faults are acted on in
accordance with company procedures.
Range

compaction, contamination limit;
processing faults may include but are not limited to – change in
flow rates, blockage, empty binder.
4.4
Running checks of process are completed during operations in accordance with
company procedures.
4.5
Material throughput is maintained in accordance with processing schedules.

The bales produced meet client and company requirements.

specialist servicing requirements are reported in accordance with company
procedures.
