Identify and correct colour problems in the hair

Purpose
This unit standard is for people in the hairdressing industry who have
knowledge of hair colour and wish to extend their colour knowledge to
correcting unwanted colour in the hair.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge of
hair colouring problems; identify the colour problem and prepare the client for
colour correction; correct the colour problem; and complete the colour
correction follow-up actions.

under the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 and Health (Hairdressers)
Regulations 1980.

In this unit standard all work must comply with legislative requirements and must
ensure optimum hair condition and maximum client comfort at all times.
Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Demonstrate knowledge of hair colouring problems.
Range
incorrect colour reflect, incorrect level, banding, insufficient coverage, fading.
Performance criteria
1.1
Hair colouring problems and their causes are described.
1.2
Corrective procedures for correcting hair colouring problems are described.
Element 2
Identify the colour problem and prepare the client for the colour correction.
Performance criteria
2.1
Work needed is identified, and is then confirmed in consultation with the client.

Hair and scalp are analysed to determine their condition.

The corrective techniques and products to be used are selected according to
the identified colour problem and the confirmed outcome, and are compatible
with the hair and scalp analysis and the type and amount of colour to be
removed.

A predisposition test for allergies is conducted in accordance with
manufacturer’s instructions.
2.6
Client is protected against water and/or product spillage.
2.7
Hair is prepared for colour correction in accordance with manufacturer’s
instructions and selected technique.

Element 3
Correct the colour problem.
Performance criteria
3.1
All tools and equipment are assembled according to the selected colour
correction technique.
3.2
All chemicals are selected and assembled according to the selected colour
correction technique and the confirmed outcome.
3.3
The hair is prepared for the colour correction according to the selected
techniques and the manufacturer’s instructions.
3.4
The selected chemicals are mixed according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
3.5
The corrective colours and/or techniques are applied according to the
manufacturer's instructions.
3.6
The chemicals are timed and monitored according to the manufacturer’s
instructions or until they have achieved the agreed correction objective.
3.7
The chemicals are removed from the hair leaving no residue on the hair and
scalp, and in a manner which will ensure optimum hair condition, according to
the manufacturer’s instructions.
Element 4
Complete the colour correction follow-up actions.

Client’s record card is filled out.

Please note
Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this
standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations
wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for
