Purpose
This unit standard is for people who are currently working in jobs which
require an understanding of the sugar cane processing value chain in a sugar
refinery.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: identify the origin of raw
sugar and the countries that supply the New Zealand sugar industry;
describe the process flow through the sugar refining operations, explain
sugar cane process streams: and describe the relationships between the
various sugar refinery operations.

Definitions
Organisational procedures refer to documents that include: worksite rules, codes,
and practices; equipment operating instructions; production specifications;
documented quality management systems; and health and safety requirements.
PPE refers to personal protective equipment and may include but is not limited to:
protective clothing, gloves, safety glasses/headwear/footwear, hearing protection,
safety devices.

Element 1
Identify the origin of raw sugar and the countries that supply the New Zealand sugar
industry.
Performance criteria
1.1
The origin of raw sugar and the countries that supply it to New Zealand are
identified in relation to the sugar milling process.

Describe the process flow through the sugar refining operations.

2.1
Current terms used in raw sugar processing in sugar refining are described in
accordance with organisational procedures.

Element 3
Explain sugar cane process streams.
Performance criteria
3.1
Process streams in a sugar refinery are explained in accordance with
organisational procedures.

3.2
Distribution of sugar refinery products is explained in accordance with
organisational procedures.
Range
includes but is not limited to – packing bins, bulk load out, bulk
liquid, molasses load out, blending specialty products.
Element 4
Describe the relationships between the various sugar refinery operations.
Performance criteria
4.1
The communication required between the various sugar refinery operations and
possible effects this can have on each operation is described in accordance
with organisational procedures.
Range
operations include but are not limited to – refinery workstations,
packing lines, warehouse storage, and distribution;
effects includes but are not limited to – scheduling, capacity,
resource availability.
Please note
Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this
standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations
wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for
tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
