People credited with this unit standard are able to prepare equipment for harvesting; harvest the fruit crop under supervision; and handle and transport the fruit crop safely. entry information: Open. People using motorised machinery to transport the crop within the orchard must have achieved Unit 19043, Check and drive a basic wheel tractor on flat terrain, or Unit 19056, Ride a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV)/All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) on flat terrain, or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills. accreditation option: Evaluation of documentation and visit by NZQA and industry. moderation option: A centrally established and directed national moderation system has been set up by the Primary Industry Training Organisation. special notes: 1 Workplace procedures refer to verbal or written instructions to staff on procedures for the worksite and equipment. 2 Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is not limited to the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, and the Resource Management Act 1991. 3 Tools, equipment and machinery for this unit standard may include but are not limited to picking bags, picking buckets, containers, secateurs, bin shade covers. Elements and Performance Criteria element 1 Prepare equipment for harvesting. performance criteria 1.1 Tools equipment and machinery appropriate to the task being undertaken are selected. 1.2 Pre-operational and safety checks are carried out on tools, equipment and machinery in accordance with manufacturers specifications and workplace procedures. 1.3 Suitable personal protective equipment and sun protection as necessary is selected, used, and maintained. element 2 Harvest the fruit crop under supervision. performance criteria 2.1 Harvesting practices minimise plant and crop damage and reflect efficient use of time, resources and labour in accordance with workplace procedures. 2.2 Basic quality harvesting, sorting, and/or grading are carried out in accordance with workplace procedures. 2.3 Harvesting tools, equipment and machinery are cleaned and maintained in accordance with workplace procedures. 2.4 Harvesting problems are reported to workplace supervisor. Range: may include but is not limited to – picking bags, picking buckets, containers. 3.2 Picking bags, picking buckets or containers are used and/or stacked in such a way that minimises damage to the crop. 3.3 Temperature of the crop is maintained at the levels set by industry. Range: 3.4 may include but is not limited to – shading bins or containers. The crop is transported within the orchard safely, and without damage, to storage or dispatch area.
