recognise and apply base fertilisers; rip seed bed areas;
carry out final cultivation; and make seed beds.

Prerequisite: Unit 27, Cultivate by tractor mounted
implements, or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills.

Evaluation of documentation and visit by NZQA, industry and
teaching professional in the same field from another

moderation option:
A centrally established and directed national moderation
system has been set up by the Primary Industry Training
Organisation.

element 1
Level land.
performance criteria
1.1
Complete clearance of crop residues ensures that subsequent operations can
proceed without hindrance.
1.2
Levelling ensures that the general contour of the land is maintained and that
ponding areas are eliminated.

Levelling and cultivation sequences preserve an even soil depth over the entire
area.
1.4
Implements are cleaned and stored, ready for future use.

Recognise and apply base fertilisers.
Range:
super phosphate, sulphate of potash, dolomite, agricultural lime, RPR (reactive
phosphate rock).

2.1
Bag markings and bag labels are checked to confirm fertiliser identity.
2.2
Fertilisers are measured out according to amounts required.
Range:
small areas, large areas, kg, bag measures.
2.3
Application techniques ensure that fertilisers are spread uniformily and at the
required rate per hectare.
2.4
Equipment is cleaned, and unused materials are stored, ready for future use.

Rip seed bed areas.

3.1
Areas are ripped at optimum soil moisture levels.
Range:
one soil type - sandy loam, silt loam, clay loam.
3.2
Ripping practices result in complete shatter of the ripped profile.
3.3
Ripping practices ensure that sub soil is not mixed with top soil.
3.4
Equipment is cleaned and stored, ready for future use.

Carry out final cultivation.

4.1
Areas are cultivated at the optimum soil moisture content.
4.2
Evenness and depth of cultivation provide soil consistency that enables roots to
penetrate readily.
Range:
4.3
cultivation practices include those applicable to both light and
heavy soils.
Cultivation equipment is cleaned and stored, ready for future use.

Make seed beds.

5.1
Seed beds are straight and of even firmness both across and along the bed.
5.2
Seed beds are prepared to a standard suitable for germination of a seedling
crop.
