People credited with this unit standard are able to: identify
culturally appropriate traditions and customs to respect and
conform to when carrying out research; research Cook Islands’
cultural heritage using culturally appropriate research methods,
and record findings; and maintain and support cultural identity,
heritage, and values in a Punanga Reo.

Glossary
Kopu Tangata – immediate family.
Iti Tangata – clan, tribe, or family.
Tupuna – grandparents, elderly people.
Akono’anga peu – customs and/or respect for the Cook Islands way of doing things.

Definitions
A Cook Islands early childhood education service, Punanga Reo, is a culture specific
centre responsible for all aspects of the child’s development based on Christian
values and consideration for others.
Service may include but is not limited to – early childhood centres, home based early
childhood educational programmes.
Research refers to gathering information in a culturally appropriate Cook Island way
and analysing the information.

Islands in the Cook Islands are – Aitutaki, Atiu, Mangaia, Manihiki, Mauke, Manuae,
Mitiaro, Nassau, Palmerston, Penrhyn, Pukapuka, Rakahanga, Rarotonga,
Suwarrow, Takutea.

Culturally appropriate traditions, customs, and akono’anga peu to respect and
conform to when carrying out research, are identified.
Outcome 2
Research Cook Islands’ cultural heritage, using culturally appropriate research methods,
and record findings.
Range
evidence of research must reflect the cultural heritage of three islands in the
Cook Islands, one of which is one’s own island affiliation.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Research of cultural heritage is carried out in the traditional akono’anga peu.
2.2
Research of cultural heritage is carried out in consultation with te Tupuna, Kopu
Tangata, and Iti Tangata.
2.3
Research of cultural heritage identifies ancestry background through recitation.
