Title Modify and test a sail in the sailmaking industry

This unit standard is for people who work in the sailmaking industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to: identify the sail modification; prepare to modify the sail; modify the sail; and test the sail.

1 Legislation and rules relevant to this unit standard include but are not limited to

Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992; and International or National Rating and/or Racing Class Rules.

2 Definitions

Company requirements refer to instructions to staff on policy and procedures which are documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace.

These requirements include but are not limited to

– company specifications and procedures, work instructions, sail and manufacturer design specifications, product quality specifications, and legislative requirements.

Class rules are rules prescribed internationally by the International Sailing Federation and administered locally by Yachting New Zealand. Rules apply to racing and recreational sailing. Yachting New Zealand’s website is http://www.yachtingnz.org.nz/ .

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Identify the sail modification.

Evidence requirements

1.1 Type of sail to be modified is identified in accordance with design specifications and/or company requirements.

Range down-wind, up-wind, reaching, storm sails.

1.2 Modification to sail is identified in accordance with customer requirements and rating limitations.

Outcome 2

Prepare to modify the sail.

Evidence requirements

2.1 Tools and equipment are identified and used in accordance with manufacturer specifications and company requirements.

Range may include but is not limited to – shears, square, measuring tape, sewing machine, needle, thread, chalk, bonding equipment.

2.2 Calculations to enable the sail to be modified are carried out in accordance with design specifications and company requirements.

2.3 Appropriate International or National Rating and/or Racing Class rules for modifying the sail are identified in accordance with company requirements and design specifications.

Outcome 3

Modify the sail.

Evidence requirements

3.1 Sail is laid out, measured, marked out, and all measurements are in accordance with design specifications and company requirements.

3.2 Defects in fabric are identified and omitted in accordance with company requirements.

3.3 Sail is cut, assembled, stitched, and/or bonded in accordance with sail modification specifications, and there are no breaks in the stitching and/or bonding.

Range includes but is not limited to – sewing machine, hand sewing, bonding; stitching even, joints flat and even.

3.4 Reinforcing is created and stitched to sail in accordance with design specifications and company requirements.

3.5 Unused materials are stored and/or disposed of in accordance with material manufacturer specifications and company requirements.

3.6 Tools and equipment are cleaned and put away in their place in accordance with company requirements.

Safe working practices are carried out throughout the task in accordance with legislative requirements.

Range

Outcome 4 personal safety; safety of others; tool and equipment safety.

Test the sail.

4.1 Sail is tested and operates in accordance with design specifications and company requirements.
