Purpose
This unit standard is for people who work in the sailmaking
industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to:
prepare to carry out hand work; carry out hand work; and test
the sail.

Explanatory notes
1
Legislation and rules relevant to this unit standard include but are not limited to – the
Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, and International or National Rating
and/or Racing Class Rules.

Definitions
Company requirements refer to instructions to staff on policy and procedures which
are documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace.
These requirements include but are not limited to – company specifications and
procedures, work instructions, sail manufacturer design specifications, product
quality specifications, and legislative requirements.
Class rules are rules prescribed internationally by the International Sailing Federation
and administered locally by Yachting New Zealand. Rules apply to racing and
recreational sailing. Yachting New Zealand’s website is

Evidence requirements
1.1
Materials to be hand worked are identified and checked in accordance with
company requirements.
1.2
Tools, equipment, and materials are identified and used in accordance with
manufacturer specifications and company requirements.
1.3
Hand work specifications are identified in accordance with customer
requirements.

Carry out hand work.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Materials are assembled for sewing in accordance with design specifications
and company requirements.
2.2
Locations of wires are identified and they are fitted in accordance with design
specifications and company requirements.
Range
wire types, wire splicing.
2.3
Locations of eyes are identified and they are fitted in accordance with design
specifications and company requirements.
2.4
Types of battens are identified, located, and fitted in accordance with design
specifications and company requirements.
2.5
Types of slides are identified, located, and fitted in accordance with design
specifications and company requirements.
2.6
Types of hanks or snap hooks are identified, located, and fitted in accordance
with design specifications and company requirements.
2.7
Types of zips are identified, located, and fitted in accordance with design
specifications and company requirements.
2.8
Types of headboard systems are identified, located, and fitted in accordance
with design specifications and company requirements.

Unused materials are stored and/or disposed of in accordance with company
requirements.

Tools and equipment are cleaned and put away in their place in accordance
with company requirements.
2.11
Safe working practices are carried out throughout the task in accordance with
legislative requirements.
