NZQA registered unit standard 11809 version 5 Page 1 of 4 Title Measure, mark out, and cut material for sail production in the sailmaking industry Level 3 Credits 12 Purpose This unit standard is for people who work in the sailmaking industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to: obtain dimensions for marking out sail panels; select materials; mark out job panels; and cut out panels. Classification Industrial Textile Fabrication > Sailmaking Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Legislation and rules relevant to this unit standard include but are not limited to – the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, and International or National Rating and/or Racing Class Rules. 2 Definitions Company requirements refer to instructions to staff on policy and procedures which are documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace. These requirements include but are not limited to – company specifications and procedures, work instructions, sail manufacturer design specifications, product quality specifications, and legislative requirements. Class rules are rules prescribed internationally by the International Sailing Federation and administered locally by Yachting New Zealand. Rules apply to racing and recreational sailing. Evidence requirements 1.1 Overall sizes are established in accordance with design specifications. Range includes but is not limited to – from drawing, plan, sample, job specifications. Range includes but is not limited to – seams, shrinkage, tapes, folds. Outcome 2 Select materials. Evidence requirements 2.1 Material type is determined and selected for each panel in accordance with design specifications and company requirements. 2.2 Material is inspected for faults, and size, in accordance with manufacturer and design specifications, and company requirements. Range may include but is not limited to – tight and slack edges, missing threads, scrim alignment, lamination, thick thread. Outcome 3 Mark out job panels. Evidence requirements 3.1 Layout of panels is determined for the most economical use of materials in accordance with design specifications and company requirements. Range 3.2 Panels are marked out on the selected material in accordance with design specifications and company requirements. Range 3.3 may include but is not limited to – French chalk, felt pen, biro, pencil, chalk line. Panel alignment marks are applied in accordance with design specifications and company requirements. Range 3.4 includes but is not limited to – sail specifications, fabric characteristics. includes but is not limited to – pen, chalk, holes, cuts, nicks, strikeup marks. Panels are marked for product and assembly identification in accordance with company requirements. Evidence requirements 4.1 Tool for cutting out is selected and checked for sharpness in accordance with company requirements. 4.2 Panels are cut out to the marked lines at the workplace required speed and accuracy in accordance with company requirements. 4.3 Panels are stacked ready for assembly in accordance with design specifications and company requirements. 4.4 Unused materials are stored and/or disposed of in accordance with manufacturer specifications and company requirements. 4.5 Tools and equipment are cleaned and put away in their place in accordance with company requirements. 4.6 Safe working practices are carried out throughout the task in accordance with legislative requirements.
