People credited with this unit standard are able to: identify and remove zips from existing products; and fit zips to materials. Explanatory notes 1 Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is not limited to the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992. 2 Definition Company requirements refer to instructions to staff on policy and procedures which are documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace. These requirements include but are not limited to – company specifications and procedures, work instructions, manufacturer specifications, product quality specifications, and legislative requirements. Range may include but is not limited to – shears, knives, scissors. 1.2 Type of material from which zips are to be removed is identified in accordance with the material manufacturer specifications and company requirements. 1.3 Types and sizes of zips to be removed are identified in accordance with manufacturer specifications and company requirements. Range may include but is not limited to – metal, nylon, PVC, open end, closed end, continuous. 1.4 Zips are removed in accordance with manufacturer specifications and company requirements, and there is no damage to adjacent materials or product. 1.5 Tools and equipment are cleaned and stored in accordance with company requirements. 1.6 Safe working practices are carried out throughout the task in accordance with legislative requirements. Range personal safety; safety of other people; environmental safety; tool, equipment, and machine safety. Outcome 2 Fit zips to materials. Range may include but is not limited to – new product, existing product; canvas, PVC, vinyl, leather. Evidence requirements 2.1 Tools, materials, and equipment are identified and used in accordance with the manufacturer specifications and company requirements. Range 2.2 may include but is not limited to – sewing machine, adhesive, shears, bonding, welding. Zips are selected to match the product and material manufacturer specifications, and are prepared for fitting in accordance with company requirements. Range may include but is not limited to – metal, PVC, open end, closed end, continuous; measured, marked out, cut to length. Range 2.4 Zips are fitted in accordance with the material manufacturer specifications and company requirements. may include but are not limited to – hand stitching, machine stitching, using adhesive, bonding, welding. Range no creases or wrinkles, move freely. 2.6 Unused materials are stored and/or disposed of in accordance with material manufacturer specifications and company requirements. 2.7 Tools and equipment are cleaned and put away in their place in accordance with company requirements. 2.8 Safe working practices are carried out throughout the task in accordance with legislative requirements.
