Elements and performance criteria

Element 1

Demonstrate knowledge of the legal requirements for animal welfare, the use of prescription animal remedies and the role of the veterinary supervisor in the removal of velvet antler.

Performance criteria

1.1 Legal requirements for animal welfare are described.

Range Animal Welfare Act 1999, the Animal Welfare (Deer) Code of

Welfare 2007.

1.2 Legal requirements for the use of prescription animal remedies (PARs) are described in terms of the Animal Remedies (Develveting) Regulations 1994.

1.3 Animal Remedies Board requirements for the use of Class II PAR drugs are described in terms of the Animal Welfare (Deer) Code of Welfare 2007 .

Element 2

The role of the veterinary supervisor in the removal of velvet antler is described in terms of the Animal Welfare (Deer) Code of Welfare 2007.

Demonstrate knowledge of the system and steps of velvet antler removal.

Performance criteria

2.1 Steps for the selection of stags ready for velveting are described in terms of their purpose in the system and the ways of minimising stress during these steps.

Range steps – mustering, drafting, settling period.

2.2 Processes of stag restraint are described in accordance with the Training

Manual, and the Code of Recommendations and Minimum Standards for the

Welfare of Deer during the Removal of Antlers 1992.

2.3 Drug selection and administration that induces analgesia in velvet antler is described in accordance with the Training Manual, and the Code of

Recommendations and Minimum Standards for the Welfare of Deer during the

Removal of Antlers 1992.

2.4 Processes of surgical removal of velvet antler are described in accordance with the Training Manual, and the Code of Recommendations and Minimum

Standards for the Welfare of Deer during the Removal of Antlers 1992.

Range instrument types include but are not limited to – hand saw, meat saw.

Element 3

Demonstrate knowledge of deer observation and attention after velvet antler removal.

Performance criteria

3.1 Treatment of wound is described in accordance with the Training Manual, and the Code of Recommendations and Minimum Standards for the Welfare of Deer during the Removal of Antlers 1992.

3.2 Reverse restraint mechanisms are described in accordance with the Animal

Welfare (Deer) Code of Welfare 2007.

Range physical, chemical.

3.3 Monitoring factors of develveted deer are described in accordance with the

Code of Recommendations and Minimum Standards for the Welfare of Deer during the Removal of Antlers 1992.

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.

Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
