6436 version 4 Page 1 of 4 Inspect civil construction plant and equipment Level 4 Credits 5 Purpose This unit standard is for people who manage machine maintenance or who supervise plant operators and verify machine maintenance. People credited with this unit standard are able to: inspect engines and drivetrains; tracks, rollers, and wheels; and moving and non-moving parts, of civil construction plant and equipment. Elements and performance criteria Element 1 Inspect engines and drivetrains of civil construction plant and equipment. Performance criteria 1.1 Electrical switches and cables are inspected for wear and tear in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions. 1.2 Fluids are inspected for colour and viscosity in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions. 1.3 Engine air supply system is inspected for wear and tear in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions. Range 1.4 Pneumatics are inspected for pressure and exterior wear in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions. Range 1.5 includes but is not limited to – precleaner, hoses, filter. includes but is not limited to – air tank, tyres. Hydraulic lines, rams, and linkages are inspected for wear, tear and oil leaks in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions. Element 2 Inspect tracks, rollers, and wheels of civil construction plant and equipment. Performance criteria 2.1 Tracks are inspected for wear and tear in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions. Range includes but is not limited to – rollers, sprockets, bushes, chains, pins, grousers. Range 2.3 may include but is not limited to – cracks, dents, scraper, spraybar. Machine wheels are inspected for wear and tear in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions. Range includes but is not limited to – tyre pressure, tread, cuts, wheelnuts. Element 3 Inspect moving and non-moving parts of civil construction plant and equipment. Performance criteria 3.1 Steerage and brakes are confirmed as operational in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions. 3.2 Frame and fittings are confirmed as operational in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions. Range chassis, frame, belly plate, cab, levers, gauges, lights, horn, nuts and bolts. 3.3 Plant is confirmed as free from foreign matter and contamination such as stones, dust, water, and rust in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions. 3.4 Operator protective structure and seat belts are confirmed as operational in accordance with Approved Code of Practice for Operator Protective Structures on Self-Propelled Mobile Mechanical Plant. Please note Providers must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment. Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards. Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
