Purpose
This unit standard is for people in the barbering industry who wish to develop
the skills of cutting hair using barbering techniques.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: prepare to cut client’s hair;
cut client’s hair using barbering techniques; and carry out finishing
procedures.

Definitions
legislative requirements refer to the obligations of the employer and/or employee
under the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 and Health (Hairdresser’s)
Regulations 1980;
tapering refers to the continuous gradation of the haircut in terms of fading;
workplace means barbering salon;
workplace requirements mean the practices prescribed by management as being the
quality standards for client contact and work organisation for a particular salon.

Range
barbering techniques must include – blend, fading, lineouts showing tapering and
blend, square, razor over comb;
haircut refers to scissor over comb (entire head), clipper over comb (sides and back),
and flattop. Assessment of all three haircuts is required.

In this unit standard all work must comply with legislative requirements and must
ensure optimum hair condition and maximum client comfort at all times.

Throughout hair removal processes excess loose hair is removed from the face and
neck with a neckbrush to ensure client’s comfort.

The flattop haircut must not be achieved with a flattop comb.
Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Prepare to cut client’s hair.
Performance criteria
1.1
The type and extent of haircut required, and any additional requirements, is
confirmed with client.
Range
1.2
includes – shape and balance;
may include – blending into beard, removal of surplus hair in ears,
in nose, and on eyebrows.
The hair and scalp are analysed in accordance with workplace requirements.
Range
movement, growth patterns, scalp irregularities, scalp condition,
texture, density, length, porosity, elasticity, previous product buildup.
1.3
Haircut selected is compatible with hair and scalp analysis and meets agreed
outcome.
1.4
The client is protected against water and/or product spillage and cut hair.

Tools are selected and prepared to meet requirements for agreed outcome and
hair type.

may include – scissors, thinning scissors, comb, clippers, clipper
oil, neckbrush;
where applicable – razor, water spray.

Element 2
Cut client’s hair using barbering techniques.
Performance criteria
2.1
Hair is cut using barbering techniques in accordance with agreed outcome and
tapering and balance requirements.
Range
techniques include – blend, fading, lineouts showing tapering and
blend, square, razor over comb.
2.2
Final hair placement and application of finishing product is in accordance with
agreed outcome.
2.3
The haircut is completed within twenty minutes.
Element 3
Carry out finishing procedures.
Performance criteria
3.1
Surplus ear, nose, and eyebrow hair is removed with scissors in accordance
with confirmed outcome.
3.2
Opening of cape and neck strip at rear allows neck hair to be trimmed.
3.3
Neck hair is trimmed with clippers and/or razor, and loose hair is removed in
accordance with confirmed outcome.
Range
where razor is used, softening agent is applied prior to hair
removal.
3.4
Use of backmirror enables client to view and confirm final result.
3.5
Removal of protective covering, and brushing of clothes where necessary,
maintains client’s cleanliness and comfort.
Range

3.6
Home haircare advice is provided that is consistent with completed service.
3.7
Tools and equipment are sanitised in accordance with workplace requirements.
3.8
Work area is cleaned and tidied in accordance with workplace requirements.

Please note
Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this
standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
