Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to identify and
take precautions against operational hazards associated with
paint mixing, and perform paint mixing operations in
accordance with enterprise procedures.

Explanatory notes
Definitions
Enterprise means an organisation where assessment is taking place, and/or where the
trainee is employed.
Enterprise procedures refer to the documented procedures used by the organisation
carrying out the work and applicable to the tasks being carried out. They may include but
are not limited to – standard operating procedures, site safety procedures, equipment
operating procedures, codes of practice, quality assurance procedures, housekeeping
standards, charging of time and materials, management of drawings and documentation,
procedures to comply with legislative and local body requirements.
Mixing may include pre-mix, let-down and make-up.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Identify and take precautions against operational hazards associated with paint mixing in
accordance with enterprise procedure.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Operational hazards associated with machinery, ancillary equipment, products,
and materials are identified, and safety precautions are taken.

Outcome 2
Perform paint mixing operations against job specifications and in accordance with
enterprise procedures.
Range
evidence is required for three mixed paint products.
Evidence requirements
2.1
The required job specification is identified and the paint manufacturing
production sequence is described.
Range
production sequence may include – ingredient assembly, premixing, dispersion, let-down and make-up, testing and adjustment,
labelling and filling.
2.2
Personal protective equipment is prepared and used in accordance with
enterprise procedure.
2.3
Raw material handling and mixing equipment is identified and prepared in
accordance with enterprise procedure.
2.4
Raw material for mixing is verified in accordance with enterprise procedure.
2.5
Mixing operations are performed, and equipment is operated in accordance with
enterprise procedure, with no damage to the plant, personnel, or material.
2.6
Emergency stopping of the mixing and ancillary equipment is demonstrated in
accordance with enterprise procedure.
Range
evidence may be simulated if required.
2.7
Production recording is carried out in accordance with enterprise procedure.
2.8
Packaging is disposed of and work area is cleared and cleaned in accordance
with enterprise procedure.
