Explanatory notes
1
Maaga variations are acceptable in meeting the requirements of this unit standard.
Endorsement of village variations may be conducted by pulotu.

Definitions
Fakaholoaga refers to the process by which something is learnt or knowledge is
transmitted;
Maaga is any one of the 14 villages that the learner identifies with through either
matrilineal or patrilineal lines, or self-identifies through acceptable fakaholoaga;
Pulotu refers to Niue village or community recognised and/or appointed experts;
Tika (or pulele) is an implement used in a traditional sporting event of Niue. It is a
long throwing rod with a smooth hardwood head;
Tradition/Traditional refers to a specific body of knowledge and practice held by
pulotu imparted to learners through community resources such as cultural leaders
and advisors.

Evidence requirements
1.1
Origins and use of the tika are described according to Niue tradition.
1.2
Composition of the tika is described according to traditional requirements.
1.3
Care of tika and safe practices associated with its use are explained according
to traditional requirements.
1.4
A legend or chant associated with the throwing of the tika is described
according to Niue tradition.
