NZQA registered unit standard 28980 version 1 Page 1 of 3 Title Assist with rearing of young stock from birth until first mating, sale or slaughter Level 3 Credits 10 Purpose This unit standard is intended for people who are assisting with the rearing of young stock from birth until first mating, sale or slaughter in a specific farming context. Classification Agriculture > Livestock Husbandry Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Assessment for this unit standard should be achieved in the context of a specific farming operation. 2 Feed requirements are those requirements of young stock from birth (first colostrum feed) through to first mating, sale or slaughter. 3 On-farm management practices in the context of this unit standard may include, but are not limited to: moving or mustering, marking, tagging, castrating, docking, weighing, velveting. 4 Candidates must comply with applicable legal requirements for rearing young stock including the Animal Welfare Act 1999, the National Animal Identification and Tracing (NAIT) Act 2012, and relevant codes where they relate to the farming context including the Codes of Welfare. 5 Candidates must comply with health and safety requirements and on-farm procedures when handling young stock. 6 Demonstrate understanding may be assessed in a number of ways, which could include ability to complete practical tasks, if it is clear that the understanding is essential underpinning knowledge to the task/s, and that the task/s could not be completed without the candidate having that knowledge. Outcome 2 Assist with rearing of young stock from weaning until first mating, sale or slaughter. Evidence requirements 2.1 Demonstrates understanding of growth rates and muscle development in young stock. 2.2 Assists with feeding young stock to ensure live weight targets are met. 2.3 Assists with the prevention and treatment of health problems of young stock. 2.4 Assists with handling and movement of young stock. 2.5 Monitors and reports young stock condition, growth rates, and feed intake.
