NZQA registered unit standard 28971 version 1 Page 1 of 3 Title Demonstrate understanding of livestock reproductive processes and practices Level 3 Credits 6 Purpose This unit standard is intended for people who are required to apply knowledge of livestock reproduction to a livestock farming system. Classification Agriculture > Livestock Husbandry Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 For this unit standard there is an expectation that the learners understanding and knowledge of this topic should be applied to specific farming industry contexts. Examples of contexts include beef, dairy, deer, goats or sheep. 2 Examples of reproductive terms may include SR (submission rates) conception rates, 6-week in-calf rate, foetal aging, AI (artificial insemination), photoperiod seasonality, lambing %, calving %, oestrus, anoestrus, scanning results. 3 Reproductive interventions are interventions in the reproductive process for the purpose of improving farm performance. Examples of reproductive interventions may include: artificial insemination, embryo transfer, semen collection, synchronised ovulation, vasectomy, use of Controlled Intra-vaginal Drug Release (CIDR), scratchies, tail paint, harnesses, and teasers. 4 Demonstrate understanding may be assessed in a number of ways, which could include ability to complete practical tasks, if it is clear that the understanding is essential underpinning knowledge to the task/s, and that the task/s could not be completed without the candidate having that knowledge. 5 Performance of all aspects of this unit standard should comply with the Welfare Code relevant to the type of livestock with which the candidate is involved, Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, sustainable practices, and on farm procedures.
