People credited with this unit standard are able to: describe safe practice in relation to handling solid waste; and demonstrate knowledge of hazards in solid waste handling. They may refer to manuals, codes of practice, or policy statements. Hazardous substances refer to substances regulated by the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996 or that meet the definition for radioactive material included in the Radiation Protection Act 1965 or Radiation Protection Regulations 1982. Site management plan refers to documented guidelines and procedures for operations at the site. It includes consent conditions and legislative requirements. Range handling relating to the workplace may include but is not limited to waste – collection, storage, processing, disposal. Evidence requirements 1.1 Safe practice requirements are described in accordance with the Health and Safety in Employment Act. Range employer obligations, employee obligations. 1.2 Safety for the environment is described in accordance with the principles of the Resource Management Act. 1.3 Safe practice in relation to solid waste is described in terms of controls imposed by Government and regulatory authorities. Range 1.4 Ministry for the Environment, Environmental Risk Authority, regional councils, territorial authorities, public health providers; controls include but are not limited to – resource consents, trade waste permits. Safe handling practices are described in accordance with company procedures. Range hazard identification and risk assessment, personal protective equipment, training, site safety plan. 1.5 Safe practices for managing health in the workplace are described in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety Service information and company procedures. 1.6 Safe practices in the event of an accident or emergency are described in accordance with company procedures.
