Purpose
This unit standard is for people who wish to enter or are
employed in the automotive repair industry. People credited
with this unit standard are able to: remove and replace a wheel;
interchange the wheels; determine the serviceability of a wheel
and tyre; and balance a wheel and tyre assembly.

Explanatory notes
The following legislation, regulations, and their amendments are required to be consulted
and followed where applicable:
Health and Safety in Employment Act, 1992;
Traffic Regulations, 1976;
Transport (Vehicle Standards) Regulations, 1990.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Remove and replace a wheel.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Safe working practices are observed throughout the task.
Range
personal safety, safety of others, no damage to equipment, vehicle
safety.
1.2
The hub supporting the wheel is raised and supported so that the wheel is clear
of the ground and the vehicle cannot slip.
1.3
The wheel is removed without damage to the vehicle, wheel, and threads of the
wheel nuts and studs.
1.4
A replacement wheel and tyre combination is fitted of the same type and size as
the one removed, and the nuts and studs tightened to the torque specified by
the vehicle manufacturer.

The support is removed and the vehicle lowered without damage to the vehicle.
Outcome 2
Interchange the wheels.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Safe working practices are observed throughout the task.

2.2

The interchangeability of the wheels and tyres is determined.
Range
matching type and size of wheels and tyres, matching tyres by
amount of wear.
2.3
The play and roughness of the wheel bearings are checked, and if beyond
manufacturer's specifications, reported to the supervisor.
2.4
The wheels are removed, repositioned, and refitted in accordance with the
servicing schedule and vehicle manufacturer's specifications.
Outcome 3
Determine the serviceability of a wheel and tyre.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Safe working practices are observed throughout the task.

3.2
The tyre condition is checked, and its compliance with the Traffic Regulations is
determined.
3.3
A tyre and tube are removed from the wheel rim without damage to the tyre,
tube, and wheel.
3.4
The suitability of a tyre, tube, wheel, and valve for further use is determined.
Range
suitable if no damage, suitable if repairable, not suitable if any
irreparable damage.

Outcome 4
Balance a wheel and tyre assembly.
Evidence requirements
4.1
Safe working practices are observed throughout the task.
Range
personal safety, safety of others, no damage to equipment.

The necessity for wheel balance is established from the supervisor.
4.3
The dynamic balance of the wheel assembly is checked and adjusted to bring
the balance within acceptable limits as detailed by the balancer manufacturer.

replaced by unit standard 21722 and unit standard
21869.

an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can
report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading
