Purpose
This unit standard is for people working on gas networks.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: explain
legislative and industry requirements for the safe start up of gas
appliances and safely relight gas appliances after disruption of
gas supply.

Definitions
Company procedures means the documented methods for performing work activities
and include health and safety, environmental, and quality management requirements.
They may refer to manuals, codes of practice, or policy statements.
Gas appliances in this unit standard refer to appliances with a gas input below
250MJ/h.

Industry requirements refers to documented instructions (written, graphic) and may
include any of the following: manufacturers’ instructions, design detail specifications;
specifications from a specialist source such as an architect, designer, engineer or a
supervisor; site or work specific requirements.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Explain legislative and industry requirements for the safe start up of gas appliances after
disruption of supply from a gas network.
Evidence requirements

1.3
The purpose of the Gas (Safety and Measurement) Regulations 2010 and the
Gas Disconnection and Reconnection Protocol GIP 001 are explained with
reference to the safe start up of gas appliances after disruption of supply from a
gas network.
1.4
Requirements to be met before re-supplying gas to a gas installation are
explained in accordance with the Gas Regulations 2010.

2.1
Tests are carried out safely and in accordance with industry requirements and
codes of practice.

Inlet valve let-by test, installation drop test.
Evidence is required for a minimum of one set of tests.
Test data is recorded in accordance with company procedures.

Unsafe installations are identified and explained in accordance with NZS5261
requirements.
Range
Evidence is required for a minimum of one of each of: appliance
condition, appliance location, proximity of combustible material,
improper flame combustion.
2.4
Gas pipe work is purged safely and in accordance with industry requirements.
2.5
Gas appliance relighting is carried out safely and in accordance with NZ5261
requirements.
2.6
Documentation is completed in accordance with Gas Disconnection and
Reconnection Protocol GIP 001 requirements.
