Strategic purpose statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the print
industry with qualified printers who have attained
appropriate capabilities and competencies to work
unsupervised and provide high quality complex printed
work using Digital Printing; Direct Marketing; Offset
Printing, Reel Fed Printing and Screen Printing
processes.
This qualification is designed for people working in the
Print industry and will typically be achieved in a
workplace environment whilst completing a New
Zealand Apprenticeship.

programme.

Apply industry knowledge of terminology,
machinery, and equipment to implement a range
of technical production skills to support print
production requirements.

produce complex print jobs to meet customer
requirements.

Troubleshoot and rectify faults and problems
throughout the print production process.

Communicate effectively with colleagues and
customers to fulfil the requirements of the work
and role.

Manage quality assurance and sustainable
environmental practices to ensure industry
standards are maintained.
Graduates of the Digital Printing Strand (including prepress and press) will also be able to:

Manage and manipulate computer files for print
and process data for application into images.
Graduates of the Direct Marketing Production Strand will
also be able to:

Manipulate and integrate data and content,
package and produce media via omni channel
platforms.
Graduates of the Offset Printing Strand (dry offset both
reel fed and sheet fed) will also be able to:

Prepare, make plates and produce printed product
using the offset printing process.
Graduates of the Reel-fed Printing Strand (flexographic,
gravure, letterpress and offset) will also be able to:

Prepare, make plates and produce printed product
using the reel fed printing process.
Graduates of the Screen printing Strand (including pad
printing) will also be able to:

Prepare, make screens and produce printed
product using the screen printing process.
Education pathway
Graduates may go on to complete the New Zealand
Diploma in Print Industry Management Level 5 [Ref:
3200] or other management qualifications.
Employment

Graduates will be qualified to work as skilled operators
and may go on to be Supervisors in the print industry.

This qualification can be awarded by an organisation which has
an approved programme of study or industry training programme
leading to the qualification.
This qualification may also be awarded by an education
organisation accredited under section 250 of the Education Act
1989 to deliver an approved programme leading to this qualification.
The certificate will display the logo of the NZQF and may display
the name and/or logo of the awarding body.
Evidence requirements for
assuring consistency
Evidence will include the following:

Employer surveys to determine if graduates of the
qualification meet the graduate profile outcomes.

Evidence of effective processes to ensure programmes
continue to meet current industry needs.

A range of workplace evidence demonstrating that graduates
meet the graduate profile outcomes.

Any other relevant evidence as appropriate.

Entry is open, however it is recommended candidates hold the
National Certificate in Educational Achievement (Level 2) [Ref:
0973] or equivalent skills and knowledge.
General conditions for the programme leading to the qualification
General conditions for
programme
The machinery will include: sheet-fed presses, reel-fed presses,
screen printing machinery, dry offset printing; digital printing
presses and pad printing machinery.
Skills will include some of (but not be limited to):
 single and multi-colour process printing
 preparing digital files
 drawing vector and raster illustrations
 undertaking digital imaging
 printing large format documents using a range of media.

Transition information
Replacement information
This qualification replaced the following qualifications:
New Zealand Certificate in Print Level 3 [Ref:1822]
New Zealand Certificate in Print Level 4 [Ref: 1823]
People currently working towards the replaced qualifications may either complete the requirements for
those qualifications by 31 December 2020 or transfer their results to the replacement New Zealand
qualification.
The last date for entry into programmes leading to this qualification is 31 December 2017.
The last date for assessment against this qualification is 31 December 2019.
It is anticipated that no existing candidates will be disadvantaged by these transition arrangements.
However, anyone who feels that they have been disadvantaged may appeal to Competenz at the
address below. Appeals will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
