Explanatory notes 1 This unit standard is underpinned by the principles in the Youth Development Strategy Aotearoa1 (YDSA) that youth development “needs good information” and is “shaped by the big picture”. It prepares people to use their knowledge and understanding of youth development practice to work with young people, and to practice accountably within established organisational policies, procedures and protocols. 2 When contributing to achievement of a degree or any degree-related qualification, assessment of this unit standard must be integrated within an approved programme of study. Practice model is a framework describing methods and approaches for working with people based on hypotheses and assumptions about best practice. Practice supervision is a contracted relationship with a skilled peer who provides a safe context to reflect on and review aspects of, or episodes in, a professional’s practice. It involves a worker meeting with an independent person who has advanced experience, knowledge and practice skills, including skills in supervisory practice. Practice supervision happens either inside or outside the workplace in a confidential setting. Specialist practice means an area/domain of specialist endeavour in which social service workers work. It includes but is not limited to practices such as: criminal justice, community development, counselling, alcohol and drug practice, creative activity-based practice, teaching, coaching and mentoring, faith-based practice, social work, foster care, iwi social services, and pacific social services. Specialist practice knowledge means the professional and procedural knowledge associated with an area of specialist practice. Specialist procedures means the practice procedures associated with a particular specialist area of practice, which are used across the specialist area of practice and within an organisation. Youth/young people are people between the ages of 12 and 24. 4 Assessment notes: This unit standard may be assessed against evidence of demonstrated performance in the workplace and/or through the use of simulated workplace settings in an educational environment. Workplace settings can include field or practice learning placements. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Summarise principal theories and procedures of an area of specialist practice. Range minimum of two theories and two procedures for one area of specialist practice. Evidence requirements 1.1 Principal theories underpinning the area of specialist practice are summarised. Range 1.2 summary includes – theory name and author, theory’s key points, scope and application, strengths and limitations, use in different cultural contexts. Principal procedures underpinning the area of specialist practice are summarised. Range summary includes – practices and procedures used, cultural and ethical considerations, scope and application, strengths and limitations. Range knowledge and procedures associated with one area of specialist practice. Evidence requirements 2.1 Application of specialist practice knowledge to positive youth development practice is evaluated. Range 2.2 evaluation includes but is not limited to – how knowledge influences and is influenced by positive youth development principles, potential applications of specialist knowledge to positive youth development practice, any cultural or ethical considerations, any benefits or constraints for positive youth development practice arising from the application of specialist knowledge. Use of specialist procedures in positive youth development practice is evaluated. Range evaluation includes but is not limited by – how procedures impact on and are impacted by positive youth development principles; how procedures inform positive youth development practice models, any cultural or ethical considerations, any benefits or constraints for positive youth development practice arising from the application of specialist procedures. Outcome 3 Use experience of an area of specialist practice to develop own model of practice under practice supervision. Evidence requirements 3.1 New learning from area of specialist practice and its impact on own practice model is identified and explained under practice supervision. Range 3.2 new learning includes but is not limited to – theories, procedures, personal experiences. Reflection is used to identify opportunities for further development of own practice model. Range reflection includes – identification of strengths in practice, opportunities for further development, planned initiatives to further develop practice.
