This unit standard is for experienced people working with
young people in the youth development sector.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: establish a
group to participate in group activities; plan group activities for
young people; lead and manage group processes during the
group activities; and evaluate group activities, as a youth
worker in the youth development sector.

Definitions
Adventure based learning – the deliberate use of sequenced activities for young
people’s personal and social development. Activities may include cooperative
games, trust building activities, problem solving and decision-making activities, and
physical activities.

Organisational policies and procedures – policies, procedures, and methodologies of
an organisation. They include legislative and regulatory requirements which may
apply across an organisation, a specific site, or a workplace. Requirements are
documented in the organisation’s health and safety plans, contract work
programmes, quality assurance programmes, policies, and procedural documents
and codes of ethics.
Principles of the Youth Development Strategy Aotearoa are: youth participation;
quality relationships; strengths based approach; shaped by the bigger picture; good
information; connectedness.
Youth/young people – people between the ages of 12 and 24.

Assessment notes
Assessment tasks must be completed in accordance with the principles of the Youth
Development Strategy Aotearoa and the Code of Ethics for Youth Work in Aotearoa
New Zealand.
Evidence is required of three group activities – one adventure based learning activity;
and two other group activities.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Facilitate the establishment of a group to participate in group activities in the youth
development sector.
Evidence requirements
1.1
The youth worker’s position in the group is described in terms of their role and
function.
1.2
Young people are facilitated to establish the group using the essential elements
of group management.
Range
essential elements of group management may include but are not
limited to – membership of and commitment to the group; ground
rules; kawa or protocols for each meeting and relationships within
the group or team; leadership; methods and procedures for
dealing with conflict;
evidence is required of two essential elements.

Plan group activities for young people in the youth development sector.

Evidence requirements
2.1
A group planning session is coordinated to identify the needs of the group in
accordance with organisational policies and procedures.
2.2
Aims and objectives of the group activities are identified according to the needs
of the group.
2.3
Group activities are selected according to the needs of the group.
2.4
Resourcing requirements are identified to meet the needs of the group.

Evidence requirements
3.1
Opportunities for open communication and active listening between group
members are encouraged during the group activity.
3.2
Strategies are practised that promote sensitivity to group members regardless
of gender, age, ethnicity, subculture, sexuality, and ability.
3.3
Conflict is managed within the boundaries of the youth worker's ability and in
accordance with organisational policies and procedures.
Outcome 4
Evaluate group activities in the youth development sector.
Evidence requirements
4.1
Group activities are evaluated in terms of the aims and objectives being met.
4.2
Feedback is sourced and evaluated from group participants.
