People credited with this unit standard are able to: identify and describe personal wellness requirements; and develop and implement a self-care plan, as a youth worker in the youth development sector. Classification Social Services > Youth Development Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Legislation and codes relevant to this unit standard include but are not limited to: Code of Ethics for Youth Work in Aotearoa New Zealand; Children, Young Persons, and Their Families Act 1989; Crimes Act 1961; Human Rights Act 1993; Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992; Official Information Act 1982; Privacy Act 1993. 2 Definitions Organisational policies and procedures – policies, procedures, and methodologies of an organisation. They include legislative and regulatory requirements which may apply across an organisation, a specific site, or a workplace. Requirements are documented in the organisation’s health and safety plans, contract work programmes, quality assurance programmes, policies, and procedural documents and codes of ethics. Needs of youth worker – may include but are not limited to: cultural, economic, educational, emotional, psychological, physical, spiritual, social, political. Wellness – an holistic concept, and means more than the absence of disease. Wellness implies emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual wellbeing, within the cultural context of the person. Youth development sector – a situation where youth development practice is being used intentionally to promote positive development of young people. Examples include education, sport, community development, religious groups, cultural groups, and interest groups. All communications with and between people preparing for award of this unit standard are treated confidentially by accredited providers, and others involved in preparation for assessment. The scope and limits of confidentiality are defined through negotiation, and informed consent, and criteria established by legislation, ethical practice, and organisational policies and procedures. Sources of criteria as established by legislation, ethical practice, and organisational policies and procedures include but are not limited to: Official Information Act 1982, Privacy Act 1993, youth development organisation codes of conduct, codes of practice issued by the Privacy Commissioner, youth development codes of ethics, and organisational policies and procedures, strategic plans, kawa, or tikanga. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Identify and describe personal wellness requirements as a youth worker in the youth development sector. Evidence requirements 1.1 Elements that enhance personal wellness are identified and described in terms of the candidate’s own needs. Range 1.2 elements that enhance personal wellness may include but are not limited to – nutrition; exercise; rest; creativity; personal and professional self-esteem; management of anger and stress; job satisfaction and security; personal and professional relationships; balanced lifestyle between family/whānau, friends, leisure, recreation, and work; professional supervision; spirituality; evidence is required of five elements. Life events that could impact on personal wellness are identified and described in terms of their potential impact on the candidate’s personal wellness. Range life events may include but are not limited to – relationship issues; family/whānau or household issues; education-related issues; loss of physical or mental abilities; physical and mental illness; grief and loss; employment-related issues; financial-related issues; housing changes; evidence is required of three life events and one potential impact for each. Outcome 2 Develop and implement a self-care plan as a youth worker in the youth development sector. Evidence requirements 2.1 Self-care strategies to enhance and maintain personal wellness are identified in terms of the candidate’s own requirements. 2.2 Self-care strategies to minimise the impact of life events on personal wellness are identified in terms of the candidate’s own requirements. 2.3 The self-care plan is implemented in terms of the strategies identified in the plan. 2.4 The self-care plan is evaluated in terms of changes to personal wellness.
