NZQA registered unit standard 21556 version 2 Page 1 of 3 Title Control weeds under supervision Level 2 Purpose Credits 2 This unit standard is for people working in the primary sector who control weeds under supervision. People credited with this unit standard are able to, under supervision, control weeds by physical means, and with agrichemicals, using methods relevant to a specified primary sector. Classification Primary Sector > Plant Pest, Weed, and Disease Control Explanatory notes 1 Legislation and regulations relevant to this unit standard include but are not limited to – Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996; Agricultural Compounds and Veterinary Medicines Act 1997; Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992; local regional and territorial authority regulatory requirements. 2 The New Zealand Standard applicable to this unit standard is NZS 8409:2004 Management of agrichemicals, or subsequent replacement, available from http://www.standards.co.nz. 3 Reference Responsible Care™ Management System, available from the New Zealand Chemical Industry Council at http://www.nzcic.org.nz. 4 Definitions Agrichemical – any substance, whether inorganic or organic, man-made or naturally occurring, modified or in its original state, that is used to eradicate, modify or control flora and fauna. It is a subset of agricultural compounds and includes pesticides, spray additives, fertilisers, vertebrate pest control products, and oral nutrition products. Weed – a plant that interferes with the management objectives of a primary sector at a particular location. It is a plant growing where it is not wanted. Workplace procedures – the verbal or written instructions to staff on the procedures for worksite, equipment and documentation. 5 Range Specified primary sector may be any one of agriculture, equine, forestry, horticulture, amenity turf, sports turf. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Control weeds under supervision by physical means using methods relevant for a specified primary sector. Range methods may include but are not limited to – mechanical cultivation, hand weed, mow, grub, heat, mulches, solarisation, stale seedbed; evidence is required for at least two. Evidence requirements 1.1 Weeds are controlled by physical means in accordance with workplace procedures. 1.2 Weeds are controlled by physical means with minimal damage to non-target plants, people, equipment, and the environment. Outcome 2 Control weeds under supervision with agrichemicals using a method relevant for a specified primary sector. Range agrichemical application methods may include but are not limited to – spot, over the crop, banded, broadcast; evidence is required for at least one. Evidence requirements 2.1 Agrichemicals are applied to control weeds using handling and application practices that are in accordance with NZS 8409:2004, and workplace procedures. 2.2 Weeds are controlled using agrichemicals with minimal damage to non-target plants, people, equipment, and the environment, and in accordance with NZS 8409:2004.
