People credited with this unit standard are able to describe: the type of information that assists mothers and their family/whānau to make an informed decision related to breastfeeding; interactions with mothers and their family/whānau related to breastfeeding; and strategies for working with mothers and their family/whānau to protect, promote, and support breastfeeding. International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes; Geneva: WHO; available at http://www.who.int/nutrition/publications/code_english.pdf. 4 Definitions Informed decision making is based on awareness of the effects of possible decisions on all or some of: mother, baby, family/whānau; Interactions refers to any instance or combination of behaviour, attitudes, interpersonal skills, and/or communication that occurs in an exchange between two or more people; Promote breastfeeding refers to promoting the benefits of breastfeeding to the broader health sector and the community; Protect breastfeeding refers to a process that enables all women to make informed decisions about infant feeding, free from the influence of formula or related industry marketing practices; and whereby their right to breastfeed anytime, anywhere, is protected; Support breastfeeding refers to the process whereby women receive information and support from all sectors of the community to overcome any barriers to breastfeeding that they may experience or perceive. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Describe the type of information that assists mothers and their family/whānau to make an informed decision related to breastfeeding. Range must include but is not limited to – breast milk is best. Evidence requirements 1.1 The type of information provided to mothers and their family/whānau is described in terms of its role in assisting them to make an informed decision related to breastfeeding. Outcome 2 Describe interactions with mothers and their family/whānau related to breastfeeding. Evidence requirements 2.1 Attitudes displayed towards mothers and their family/whānau are described in terms of respect for, and acknowledgement of, their culture, values, and beliefs. Range attitudes include but are not limited to – accepting differences and respecting the dignity and privacy of the mother; evidence is required of a minimum of four attitudes. Range Outcome 3 Describe strategies for working with mothers and their family/whānau to protect, promote, and support breastfeeding. Range evidence is required for two strategies; both strategies must be in accordance with the Code of Practice for Health Workers. Evidence requirements 3.1 Strategies for working with breastfeeding mothers and their family/whānau are described in accordance with the mother’s identified culture. 3.2 Strategies for working with breastfeeding mothers and their family/whānau are described in terms of the health worker’s scope of practice.
