In the context of this unit standard, support should aim to maintain, improve, or
restore a consumer’s independence and/or interdependence by utilising the person’s
existing strengths and appropriate resources; but may include providing assistance to
enable a client’s health and wellbeing needs to be met.

Definitions
Health or wellbeing setting includes but is not limited to – the aged care, acute care,
community support, disability, mental health and social services.
Organisational policies and procedures – policies, procedures and methodologies of
an organisation. They include legislative and regulatory requirements which may
apply across a company, a specific site, or a workplace. Requirements are
documented in the company’s health and safety plans, contract work programmes,
quality assurance programmes, policies and procedural documents.

This unit standard cannot be assessed against in a simulated environment. For
assessment, candidates must demonstrate competence in the workplace through

paid or unpaid employment, or in placements in a service provider workplace
negotiated by an education provider.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Describe the impact of loss and grief situations on people in a health or wellbeing setting.
Range
evidence is required for the impact of a minimum of four situations.

Situations that cause loss and grief are described in terms of their impact on
people.

Describe and respond to a loss and grief situation in a health or wellbeing setting.

Response to the loss and grief situation is described in terms of ways to
improve own ability to cope with loss and grief situations.

evidence is required of a minimum of two different ways.
Response to the loss and grief situation is described in terms of supporting
other people’s ability to cope with the situation.
