The qualification is aimed primarily at people working in or interested in entering the property maintenance industry. It will also be useful for people wishing to gain introductory skills towards a career in carpentry, cleaning, electrical work, flooring, glazing, grounds maintenance, painting, joinery, plumbing, or roofing. The compulsory section covers health and safety, basic job skills and tool use, along with knowledge and skills required to perform basic residential property maintenance under supervision, while the optional strand offers the choice of a range of knowledge and skills which can be applied to project work within the property maintenance industry. Changes to the structure and content The qualification total was reduced from 74 to 71 credits. Standard 8492 was removed. The purpose statement was updated. People currently enrolled in programmes leading towards the award of version 1 of the qualification may complete that version if unit standard 8492 is registered as achieved on their record of achievement. People currently enrolled in programmes leading towards the award of version 1 of the qualification who do not have unit standard 8492 registered as achieved on their record of achievement can transfer to version 2. Previous versions of the qualification This qualification replaced the National Certificate in Elementary Construction Skills (Basic Residential Property Maintenance) [Ref: 0751]. It was issued following the second stage of the review of standards in the Elementary Construction Skills domain. There are substantial differences between the National Certificate in Elementary Construction Skills (Basic Residential Property Maintenance) [Ref: 0751] and this qualification. The compulsory section has been expanded to include standards covering specific residential maintenance skills as well as a range of broader construction-related skills. The electives have been replaced with an optional strand from which candidates may choose three project-based standards. People currently working towards the National Certificate in Elementary Construction Skills (Basic Residential Property Maintenance) [Ref: 0751] may choose to complete that qualification or transfer their results to this qualification. The final date for entry into programmes or courses leading to version 4 of the National Certificate in Elementary Construction Skills (Basic Residential Property Maintenance) [Ref: 0751] is 31 December 2008. The final date for assessment against version 4 of that qualification is 31 December 2010. This qualification contains standards that replace or are substituted for other standards. For the purposes of this qualification, people who have gained credit for the replaced or substituted standards are exempt from the requirement to gain credit for the replacement standards.
