The qualification provides a foundation of core skills and knowledge which build on the units contained in the core of the National Certificate in Rail Transport (Level 2) [Ref: 0958] and include core generic units, workplace health and safety and emergency response units, communication units and rail industry specific units. There is a core elective section to allow for flexibility. The three strands each have a compulsory rail operations unit standard and two elective sections. In each case Elective A provides options for candidates to demonstrate competence using the signalling/track control systems operating in their geographical area. Elective B provides for recognition of specialist and in depth skills and knowledge relating to either freight or passenger or multiple unit/railcar operation.
