Purpose
This unit standard is for people in the marine repair industry. People credited
with this unit standard are able to: determine action to be taken for previously
submerged marine engines, systems, and/or components; identify the nature
and extent of the damage; and arrange for the restoration of the marine
engine, systems, and/or components.

Definition
Company requirements refer to instructions to staff on policy and procedures which
are documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace.
These requirements include but are not limited to – company specifications and
procedures, work instructions, manufacturer specifications, product quality
specifications, and legislative requirements.

For this unit standard, it is essential that the practical assessment evidence is
obtained in the workplace under normal workplace conditions.
Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Determine action to be taken for previously submerged marine engines, systems, and/or
components.
Performance criteria
1.1
Documentation relating to insurance, salvage, and legislative requirements is
completed and reported to the employer in accordance with company
requirements.
1.2
The nature, time, and details of the recovery of the submerged marine engine,
systems, and/or components are noted in accordance with company
requirements.
1.3
Environmental considerations relating to spills, pollution, and disposal are taken
into account in accordance with Resource Management Act before determining
action to take.
1.4
Original layout of the boat’s equipment is determined in consultation with the
customer in accordance with company requirements.
1.5
A preliminary investigation of the marine engine, systems, and/or components is
carried out to determine immediate action to prevent further deterioration, and to
formulate an action plan to fully restore the engine, systems, and/or
components.
1.6
Written authority to proceed with the job is obtained from the customer in
accordance with company requirements.
Element 2
Identify the nature and extent of the damage.
Performance criteria
2.1
Actions are taken to ensure safety of personnel and boat’s equipment by
isolating power, gas, and fuel in accordance with company requirements.

2.2
Actions are taken to ensure environmentally safe conditions exist in accordance
with company requirements.
Range
disposal of batteries, fuel, oil, and explosive gases; foul and
contaminated water; recovery and disposal of refrigerant.
2.3
The equipment and components are cleaned to enable a detailed examination
of their condition to be carried out in accordance with company requirements.
2.4
The equipment and components are dismantled and inspected in accordance
with company requirements, and a condition report and repair costings are
completed.
2.5
Components are inhibited against further corrosion in accordance with company
requirements.
Element 3
Arrange for the restoration of the marine engine, systems, and/or components.
Performance criteria
3.1
Required actions are identified in consultation with the customer and in
accordance with company requirements.
Range
repair, replace, no further action deemed necessary, disposal;
costings estimated.
3.2
Arrangements are made so that engine, systems, and/or components are
restored to full serviceability in accordance with company requirements.
3.3
Work is completed in accordance with company requirements.

outwork contractors, and manufacturers; ensuring costs and
completion time are within estimate; ensuring legal requirements
are met.
Marine engine, systems, and/or components are tested in accordance with
company requirements.
Please note
Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.

Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this
standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations
