Purpose
This unit standard has been designed to be achieved in a building,
construction and allied trades skills (BCATS) programme.
People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of
the masonry industry within a BCATS environment.

regulatory, support or advisory capacity. This includes regulatory bodies, industry
training organisations and trade or professional associations.

Element 1
Demonstrate knowledge of the masonry industry within a BCATS environment.
Performance criteria
1.1
Major sectors of the masonry industry are identified, and described in terms of
the scope of work undertaken by a masonry tradesperson.
Range
1.2
Common work processes undertaken by masonry tradespeople are identified
and described, and reasons for the processes are explained.
Range
1.3
foundations, laying blocks including reinforcing and grouting,
laying bricks.
Potential clients of a masonry tradesperson are identified and the nature of the
relationship is described.

Potential supply relationships of a masonry tradesperson are identified and the

Industry bodies involved in the masonry industry are identified and their impacts
on the work of masonry tradespeople are described.

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.

Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this
standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations
wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for
