Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to: plan the
survey; prepare self and team to conduct fieldwork; conduct the
survey; and reduce data and prepare plan, for a surface
extractive site.

code:
Code of Practice for Mine Surveys (Underground) 2000 (the Code). Copies of this
document are available from MITO, telephone 0800 88 2121.

Definitions
Site requirements mean the documented methods for performing work activities and
include health and safety, operational, environmental, and quality management
requirements. They may refer to manuals, codes of practice, or policy statements.
Mine refers to all types of underground mines and tunnels.
Industry best practice refers to those practices which competent practitioners within
the industry recognise as current industry best practice. These may be documented
in management plans, company procedures, managers’ rules, occupational health
and safety policy, industry guidelines, codes of practice, manufacturers’ instructions,
and safe working and/or job procedures (or equivalent).
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Plan the surface extractive site survey.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Liaison with management is established and scope of work negotiated in
accordance with the site development plans.
1.2
Existing data are searched in relation to adopted local control.
1.3
Potential hazards and limiting factors are identified in terms of the site
concerned.

1.4
Methodology of survey is decided upon in relation to the site concerned.
1.5
Specialised equipment appropriate to the site is decided upon.
1.6
Transport for survey is arranged in accordance with site requirements.
Outcome 2
Prepare self and team to conduct surface extractive site fieldwork.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Team is briefed and equipment is checked as serviceable and able to meet the
surveying needs of the team in relation to the planned survey.
2.2
Ability of, and safety procedures for, members of survey team are established in
accordance with the methodology of the survey and the site requirements.
2.3
The manager or their representative is notified of the survey in accordance with
site requirements.
2.4
Equipment and survey personnel are signed into the site in accordance with site
requirements.
2.5
Required equipment is collected, carried, or worn in accordance with site
requirements.
Outcome 3
Conduct the surface extractive site survey.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Site supervisor is notified of arrival and withdrawal of team in accordance with
site requirements.
3.2
Safety of site and proposed work area is established in accordance with
industry best practice.
3.3
Survey is conducted in accordance with the predetermined plan.
3.4
Exit procedures are carried out in accordance with site requirements.
3.5
Equipment is cleaned and stored in a ready-to-use condition.

Outcome 4
Reduce data and prepare surface extractive site plan.
Evidence requirements
4.1
Data is reduced in accordance with the Code.
4.2
Plan is drawn in accordance with the Code.
4.3
Statutory plans are submitted to the site manager in accordance with site
requirements.

by unit standard 29087.
This unit standard is expiring. Assessment against the standard must take place by
the last date for assessment set out below.
