Demonstrate knowledge of alcohol and other drugs in social service work
2 This is a theory unit standard primarily intended for social service workers working with alcohol and other drugs. It is designed to support other generic unit standards in the social services by providing a theoretical context for this field of practice within the social services.
3 Glossary
Alcohol and other drugs is the chosen term for this unit standard. Alcohol is a drug, but it is specified because reference to drugs may or may not be interpreted to include alcohol.
Other drugs refers to both prescribed and nonprescribed drugs, and includes anticholinergics, cannabis, benzodiazepines, inhalants, hallucinogens, opiates, and nicotine and other stimulants.
Misuse means the use of alcohol and other drugs that includes or exceeds hazardous use on the continuum of use defined in performance criterion 1.1.

Elements and Performance Criteria element 1
Describe concepts related to the use of alcohol and other drugs. performance criteria
1.1 Usage of alcohol and other drugs is described according to symptoms and the continuum of use.
Range: symptoms - physical, behavioural, spiritual; continuum of use - abstinence, safe use, hazardous use, problem use, dependence.
1.2 The statistical patterns of use of alcohol and other drugs are described in terms of age, gender, culture, sexual orientation, and socio-economic status of users in Aotearoa New Zealand.
1.3 The parameters of safe use of alcohol under specific conditions are described with respect to the characteristics of people using alcohol.
Range: specific conditions - driving, work, learning, in conjunction with other drugs or medication, environment, sexual activity; characteristics - age, culture, gender, health status, sexual orientation, socio-economic status. element 2
Describe factors that contribute to the use and misuse of alcohol and other drugs. performance criteria
2.1 The description outlines social factors and contexts that contribute to or nurture the use and misuse of alcohol and other drugs.
Range: social factors and contexts - legal availability, illegal availability, price, promotion, colonisation, patriarchy, culture, family or wh ānau environment, socio economic status, political environment.

2.2 The description outlines personal factors that contribute to or nurture the use and misuse of alcohol and other drugs.
Range: personal factors - biological, cultural learning, psychological, personality, trauma, grief and shame, pleasure. element 3
Describe outcomes of use and misuse of alcohol and other drugs. performance criteria
3.1 The outcomes of the use and misuse of alcohol and other drugs are described with respect to the health of those who are affected by their own use of alcohol and other drugs.
Range: health - emotional, mental, physical, spiritual, family or wh ānau.
3.2 The outcomes of the use and misuse of alcohol and other drugs are described with respect to the health of those who are affected by the use of alcohol and other drugs by another person.
Range: health - emotional, mental, physical, spiritual; those affected - include partners and family or whānau.
3.3 The description outlines possible outcomes of the use and misuse of a mixture of drugs.
Range: mixture - mixture of alcohol and one other drug, mixture of two drugs other than alcohol, poly drug abuse, mixture of alcohol or other drug with a prescribed medication.
Evidence is required of one example of each.

Describe the relationship of the misuse of alcohol and other drugs to cultural, family or whānau, social, and economic contexts. performance criteria
4.1 The description outlines the relationship of alcohol and other drug misuse to cultural contexts.
Range: cultural contexts -
Māori, Pakeha, Pacific Islands, age, gender, disabilities, sexual orientation, socio-economic status; relationship - colonisation, compromise of culture, change or deprivation of cultural practices, effect on ability to take part in cultural activities, effect on meeting full potential, cultural isolation, poverty, unemployment.
Evidence is required of three relationships to one cultural context.
4.2 The description outlines the impact of alcohol and other drug misuse on victims and families or wh ānau of people misusing alcohol and other drugs.
Range: impact - abuse or other violence; co-dependence; crime; housing; poverty or other economic issues; unemployment or other employment issues.
4.3 The description outlines the social and economic costs of the use and misuse of alcohol and other drugs.
Range: social and economic costs - crime, accidents, housing, injuries, sickness, incapacity, public health, welfare, social services, unemployment.

Describe processes and services related to assessment and intervention for people misusing alcohol and other drugs. performance criteria
5.1 Assessment and intervention for people misusing alcohol and other drugs are described in terms of assessment and intervention processes.
Range: processes - screening, assessment, cultural assessment, treatment, after care.
5.2 Services available to the local community for people who are affected by misuse of alcohol and other drugs are described in terms of the characteristics of people for whom the services are provided.
Range: services - cultural, assessment, detoxification, education and information giving, public health, counselling, services for people affected by others misusing alcohol and other drugs, family or wh ānau support, community support, short term and long term residential treatment, self help groups, telephone counselling. characteristics - age, culture, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status.
Evidence is required of one service for each characteristic.
