Purpose
This unit standard is for people working, or intending to work in horticulture.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: select, operate and
maintain equipment for a given crop; select and harvest a horticulture crop;
and prepare the crop for market.

Range one commercial crop from the following – cut flower production, outdoor
vegetable production, or greenhouse production. The selected crop needs to be
harvested and prepared for market over a minimum period of two consecutive
months.

The horticultural industry has a range of quality control and management systems for
each horticultural sector. In order to source suitable information to prepare for
assessment against this unit standard it is recommended that candidates contact
relevant national horticultural industry or marketing organisations.
Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Select, operate and maintain equipment for a given crop.
Performance criteria
1.1
Equipment chosen is appropriate to the crop and the local conditions.
1.2
Equipment is operated in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and
workplace procedures.
1.3
Equipment is serviced and checked daily and if not functional is reported to a
supervisor.
Element 2
Select and harvest a horticulture crop.
Performance criteria
2.1
Only crop produce ready for harvest, or of a type specified by management, is
selected.
2.2
Horticulture produce is harvested in accordance with quality management
systems and workplace procedures, with minimal damage to the soil or the
crop.
Horticulture produce is placed in containers with no damage to product.
Element 3
Prepare the crop for market.
Performance criteria
3.1
The appearance of the crop is enhanced to meet quality management
standards in accordance with workplace procedures.

3.2
Crop is transferred to packaging system so that it is not damaged or
contaminated.
3.3
Cool chain requirements for the crop, if necessary are met in accordance with
workplace procedures.
Please note
Providers must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority, or an inter-institutional body
with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from
assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority before
they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this
standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations
wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for
