NZQA registered unit standard 8022 version 5 Page 1 of 3 Title Demonstrate knowledge of microbial-animal interactions Level 6 Credits 6 Purpose People credited with this unit standard are able to discuss: normal flora of animals; microbe-induced disease processes in animals; and epidemiology. Classification Science > Microbiology Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes None. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Discuss normal flora of animals. Evidence requirements 1.1 The animal body is discussed in terms of habitat suitability for microorganisms. Range 1.2 Major microbe groups are described in relation to the rumen. Range 1.3 skin, upper respiratory tract, alimentary tract, urogenital tract. archaea, bacteria, fungi, protozoa. The normal flora associations are discussed in terms of their effects on the host. Outcome 2 Discuss microbe-induced disease processes in animals. Range bacteria, fungi, protozoa, viruses. Evidence requirements 2.1 Sources and reservoirs of microbial pathogens are described in terms of the disease process. NZQA National Qualifications Services SSB Code 130301 New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 NZQA registered unit standard 2.2 Pathogenesis is discussed in relation to the disease process for an animal. Range 2.3 8022 version 5 Page 2 of 3 evidence of one animal disease from each microbe group is required. Control mechanisms are discussed in relation to the specific animal disease. Outcome 3 Discuss epidemiology. Evidence requirements 3.1 Transmission of infectious diseases is discussed in terms of localised outbreaks, epidemics, and pandemics. 3.2 Role surveillance, typing methods, and intervention in controlling infectious diseases are discussed in terms of animal populations.
