Credit for this unit standard does not indicate workplace roleholder competence but is a foundation standard contributing to the development of graphic design expertise. Classification Design > Generic Design Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 In the process of attaining this unit standard, learners are expected to use a range of computing, printing, and photographic methods, in addition to graphic media and techniques, where appropriate. 2 Development of the written design brief requires establishing contact with the client and determining, in consultation with the client, the scope of the project. 3 Examples of knowledge and skills required in order to meet the outcomes of this unit standard are: use of lettering and type, grids, layout of text and visual elements, presentation visuals; and camera-ready print to the quality used in magazines, newspapers, instructional texts, corporate reports, and promotional literature. Also, understanding of the necessity to evaluate outcomes in relation to the market and the consumer, while meeting client requirements. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Develop a design brief, and prepare to produce graphics for marketing and promotion. Evidence requirements 1.1 Design brief developed meets client requirements. Outcome 2 Develop the visual layout. Evidence requirements 2.1 Graphic concepts are explored, using thumbnail sketches and visual roughs, to produce ideas for solving the problems. 2.2 Visual layout developed expresses solutions for solving the problems. Range 2.3 may include – illustration, lettering, type, text layout, colour. Final rough visual developed gains client approval. Outcome 3 Produce a print-ready media solution for promotional and marketing graphics. Evidence requirements 3.1 Selection of graphic techniques enables the communication of the final art work. 3.2 Processes selected and applied enable the communication of the final art work. Range 3.3 may include – scanning, printing, photography, computing, lettering. Completed graphic solution gains client approval, and meets processing requirements. Outcome 4 Evaluate the final media design, and make any necessary modifications. Evidence requirements 4.1 Final graphic proof is checked against the requirements of the brief to identify any needed modifications. 4.2 Graphic solution is modified, where necessary, to meet client and printing requirements.
