Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate
knowledge of access ladders, and use access ladders in an
emergency situation.

Explanatory notes
1
Compliance with the fire and rescue service provider’s Health and Safety policy and
procedures is mandatory.

Definitions
Access ladders refer to short or medium extension ladders that are designed for
gaining access. For rescue ladder use please refer to unit standard 26993, Use
rescue ladders in fire and rescue situations.
Fire and rescue service provider’s requirements refer to policies and procedures on
safety and operation set down by each fire and rescue service employer or host
organisation.
Ladders refer to those that are supplied at the candidate’s own station, at a training
facility, or on an appliance.

Assessment against this unit standard may take place under real or practical
simulated conditions.

Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes the Health and Safety in
Employment Act 1992, and Health and Safety in Employment Regulations 1995.

Outcome 1
Demonstrate knowledge of access ladders.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Access ladder components are identified and their use explained in accordance
with the fire and rescue service provider’s requirements.

Safety considerations when using access ladders are explained in accordance
with the fire and rescue service provider’s requirements.

Evidence requirements
2.1
Access ladder is established in an emergency situation by working as part of a
crew in accordance with the fire and rescue service provider’s requirements.
2.2
Access ladder is climbed and worked from in an emergency situation in
accordance with the fire and rescue service provider’s requirements.
Range
mount head of ladder, dismount head of ladder.
2.3
Access ladder is housed in accordance with the fire and rescue service
provider’s requirements.
2.4
Faults are reported and documentation completed in accordance with the fire
and rescue service provider’s requirements.

Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by
NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and
which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that
applies to those standards.
Consent requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this
standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations
wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for
tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
