Classification Electricity Supply > Electricity Supply - Transmission Networks Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 This unit standard can be assessed in a workplace environment, or in a training or educational environment if simulated equipment and examples are able to be provided, or in a combination of both environments. 2 Safety of personnel and plant must be a priority throughout the assessment. If the safety requirements are not met the assessment must stop and the candidate will be assessed as not yet competent. 3 Performance and work practices in relation to the outcomes and evidence requirements, must comply with all current legislation, especially the Electricity Act 1992 and any subsequent amendments, and any regulations, codes of practice recognised under that statute; Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, the Resource Management Act 1991, and their subsequent amendments; electricity supply industry codes of practice and documented enterprise procedures. These include updated versions of Safety Manual – Electricity Industry (SM-EI) Wellington: Electricity Engineers’ Association. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Describe health and safety requirements for low pressure water abrasive blasting on electricity structures. Evidence requirements 1.1 Health and safety industry requirements met when using low pressure water abrasive blasting on electricity structures. 1.2 Restrictions on low pressure water abrasive blasting media used in the workplace are described in accordance Health and Safety in Employment Regulations. 1.3 Potential workplace hazards using low pressure water abrasive blasting equipment on electricity structures is described in accordance with company and industry requirements. 1.4 Health hazards of low pressure water abrasive blaster operation are described in terms of short and long term effects. 1.5 Requirements for the provision and maintenance of protective clothing is described. Outcome 2 Describe and operate low pressure water abrasive blaster on electricity structures. Evidence requirements 2.1 Low pressure water abrasive blasters are described in terms of their classification. 2.2 Components of a low pressure water abrasive blaster are identified and functions described. 2.3 Safety precautions in the operation of low pressure water abrasive blaster are described. 2.4 Water purity is tested prior to use. Infrastructure ITO SSB Code 101813 New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 NZQA registered unit standard 29086 version 1 Page 3 of 4 2.5 Methods of defining blast work area are described in accordance with company and industry requirements. 2.6 Pre-operational checks are described and made prior commencement of blasting operation. 2.7 Personal protective equipment for the job is checked, fitted and worn in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and company requirements. 2.8 System is flushed with sufficient water to decontaminate equipment prior to use. 2.9 Setup a worksite according to industry requirements ready for low pressure water abrasive blasting according to the job specification. 2.10 Apply low pressure water abrasive blasting to electricity structures requiring adjustment of water pressure to suit surfaces being cleaned in accordance to job specifications. 2.11 Work site is shutdown on completion, equipment cleaned and stored in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and company procedures.
