NZQA registered unit standard 29084 version 1 Page 1 of 4 Title Describe and apply protective coatings to electricity structures Level 4 Credits 25 Purpose People credited with this unit standard are able to: describe, compare, determine quantities, prepare and mix wet protection coatings: apply coatings and maintain coating equipment used on electricity transmission structures. Classification Electricity Supply > Electricity Supply - Transmission Networks Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 This unit standard can be assessed in a workplace environment, or in a training or educational environment if simulated equipment and examples are able to be provided, or in a combination of both environments. 2 Safety of personnel and plant must be a priority throughout the assessment. If the safety requirements are not met the assessment must stop and the candidate will be assessed as not yet competent. 3 Performance and work practices in relation to the outcomes and evidence requirements, must comply with all current legislation, especially the Electricity Act 1992 and any subsequent amendments, and any regulations, codes of practice recognised under that statute; Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, the Resource Management Act 1991, and their subsequent amendments; electricity supply industry codes of practice and documented enterprise procedures. These include updated versions of Safety Manual – Electricity Industry (SM-EI) Wellington: Electricity Engineers’ Association. A full list of current legislation and industry codes is available from: Infrastructure Industry Training Organisation PO Box 2759 Wellington 6140. 4 Reference to terms, procedures, and specifications in this unit standard may be taken as including industry documented procedures and specifications relevant to the workplace in which assessment is carried out. 5 The following terms and abbreviations relate to this unit standard: Industry requirements include all asset owner requirements; manufacturers’ specifications; and enterprise requirements which cover the documented workplace policies, procedures, specifications, business and quality management requirements relevant to the workplace in which assessment is carried out. Infrastructure ITO SSB Code 101813 New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 NZQA registered unit standard 6 29084 version 1 Page 2 of 4 Assessment of practical skills against the outcomes in this standard requires three practical observations from three different workplace activities in an electricity supply environment. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Describe, compare and determine quantities of protective coatings applied to electricity structures. Evidence requirements 1.1 Protective coatings are described in terms of their properties and characteristics. 1.2 Protective coatings are compared in terms of relative costs and service life. 1.3 Protective coating products are described in terms of their potential harmful effects on the human body in accordance with the Safety Data Sheets and product data sheets. 1.4 The incompatibility and compatibility of wet protective coatings with different structure substrates is determined and explained. 1.5 Surface preparation requirements for compatible coatings are described in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications. 1.6 The quantity of wet protective coating required for a given job is estimated in accordance with job specification and product data sheet. 1.7 The quantity of product is calculated from given mixing or thinning ratios and application rates to achieve prescribed thickness in accordance with job specification. Outcome 2 Prepare and mix components for wet protective coatings. Evidence requirements 2.1 Personal protective clothing is fitted and worn in accordance with industry procedures and product requirements. 2.2 Mixing procedures for wet protective coatings are described in accordance with product data sheet and safety data sheet. 2.3 Wet protective coatings are mixed and/or thinned in accordance with job specification. Range surfaces may include but are not limited to – steel, galvanised surfaces, aluminium, stainless steel, concrete, timber. Evidence requirements 3.1 Job specifications, including products and equipment to be used, are confirmed in accordance with industry and/or company procedures. 3.2 Personal protective clothing and climbing equipment for applying wet protective coatings are fitted and worn in accordance with industry and/or company procedures for working at heights on structures. 3.3 Route for application of wet protection coating is planned according to requirements of product application method, drying/curing times and structure design. 3.4 Damaged or flawed protective coating is touched up to meet job specification or identified during pre-inspection. 3.5 Apply a range of wet protective coating products to structures. Range evidence of three different types of protective coating products on three different structures. Outcome 4 Maintain, clean and store wet protective coating equipment. Evidence requirements 4.1 Coating equipment is cleaned, checked for maintenance, and stored in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and company procedures. equipment may include but is not limited to – brushes, rollers, spray equipment.
