Explanatory notes
1
This unit standard can be assessed in a workplace environment, or in a training or
educational environment if simulated equipment and examples are able to be
provided, or in a combination of both environments.

Safety of personnel and plant must be a priority throughout the assessment. If the
safety requirements are not met the assessment must stop.

Performance and work practices in relation to the outcomes and evidence
requirements must comply with all current legislation, especially the Electricity Act
1992 and any subsequent amendments, and any regulations, codes of practice
recognised under that statute; Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, the
Resource Management Act 1991, and their subsequent amendments; electricity
supply industry codes of practice and documented enterprise procedures. These
include updated versions of Safety Manual – Electricity Industry (SM-EI) Wellington:
Electricity Engineers’ Association.

The following terms and abbreviations relate to this unit standard:
Asset owner refers to an electricity industry participant who owns or operates assets
used for generating or conveying electricity.
Asset owner procedures are the approved documented work site methods for
carrying out work on electrical generation assets or supply network to the standard
required by the asset owner.
Industry requirements include all asset owner procedures; manufacturers’
specifications; and enterprise requirements which cover the documented workplace
policies, procedures, specifications, and business and quality management
requirements relevant to the workplace in which assessment is carried out.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Demonstrate knowledge of transmission tower structure steel replacement in accordance
with industry requirements.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Steel members requiring replacement are defined.
1.2
The concepts of tower structure compression, tension, and loading are
described.
Outcome 2
Plan the replacement of transmission tower structure steel in accordance with industry
requirements.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Scope of work is determined.
2.2
Steel members that can be removed without risk are identified.
2.3
Steel members that require temporary load removal, by-passing, or removal of
structure loads are identified.
2.4
Rigging loads are calculated and rigging plan developed.
2.5
Tooling is selected to match work instruction.
Outcome 3
Replace transmission tower steel, and complete job record, in accordance with industry
requirements.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Electrical clearances are maintained.

Steel member is identified as loaded or not loaded prior to removal.
3.3
Rigging plan is complied with.
3.4
Tower is rigged to temporarily remove load from steel member.
3.5
Steel requiring replacement is removed.
3.6
Replacement steel is installed.
3.7
Bolts are torqued.
3.8
Worksite is reinstated.
3.9
Job record is completed.
